[Fukuoka's popular restaurant] Excellent value for money sushi lunch in Tenjin! A popular restaurant frequented by locals<Menu included>
Hello. I'm Kawai, a writer who covers a wide range of topics, from gourmet food to town information.
For the eighth installment of our series introducing popular restaurants that have long lines, we have selected Hyotan Sushi, located a two-minute walk from Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) Station.
"Hyotan Sushi" (Tenjin, Chuo Ward, Fukuoka City) where you can enjoy delicious sushi made with fresh ingredients at reasonable prices
The owner himself visits the Nagahama Fish Market every morning to become a connoisseur. At Hyotan Sushi, you can enjoy reasonably priced sushi made by skilled chefs using fresh seasonal fish caught in the Genkai Sea and all over the country. This popular restaurant impresses even local sushi connoisseurs.
It is located on the second and third floors of the building across the street from Solaria Stage on the Shintencho side. By the way, there is also a sister restaurant, Hyotan no Kaiten Sushi, on the second basement floor of Solaria Stage, which is also known for its long lines.

On the day I visited, there were about 15 people in line. On weekdays, 80-90% of the customers are foreign tourists, but on weekends, about half are Japanese. When there are a lot of people waiting, a line forms in front of the store.

The second floor has about 70 seats, and the third floor has about 50. Both floors have counter seats with displays of ingredients, as well as table seats and tatami seating.
Lunch is especially popular! We tried the recommended "Hyotan Set Meal"
They boast about 100 types of nigiri sushi, with items like "Hakata Mentaiko" starting at 176 yen.
They also have a wide selection of blue fish, such as "Fresh Mackerel" (396 yen) and "Local Horse Mackerel" (396 yen). The tender and crumbled "Grilled Conger Eel" (429 yen) and the addictive "Bite-sized Abalone Dance" (583 yen) are some of their signature dishes that you'll definitely want to order.
In addition to the menu, there are also pop-ups of recommended dishes posted all over the restaurant, so be sure to check them out!

The lunch-only menu, available from 11:30 to 14:30, is also very popular. The "Jumbo Set Meal" (1,628 yen) features large toppings and rice and comes with 10 nigiri sushi, 3 thin rolls, and soup; the "Chawanmushi Set Meal" (1,518 yen) with 4 nigiri sushi, 3 thin rolls, 1 hand roll, and chawanmushi; and the "Hyotan Set Meal" (1,628 yen) with 8 nigiri sushi, a negitoro roll, a lettuce roll, and soup. It's great that you can enjoy such excellent sushi for around 1,000 yen!
Another popular dish is the luxurious lunch set "Seasonal Chef's Choice Nigiri" (3,630 yen), which includes the specialty "Crab Cream Croquette" (628 yen a la carte), which is filled with so much crab meat that it feels like you're eating crab, and "Shellfish Soup."

This time, I tried the classic "Hyotan Set Meal" (1,628 yen), named after the restaurant.
The balance of ingredients, such as tuna, salmon, and squid, is perfect and satisfying. It's great to be able to enjoy sushi made by a skilled chef with the finest ingredients and rice at this price. It's no wonder there's a line! *Ingredients may change depending on the stock.
Recommended at night too
There are also plenty of set menus that can be ordered at any time of the day, such as the "Jo Nigiri" (2,750 yen) which includes nine pieces of raw sea urchin, raw shrimp, wild sea bream, scallops, and red cod, and a soup, and the "Today's Special Netazu" (3,960 yen) which includes ten pieces of the finest toppings, such as fatty tuna and bite-sized live abalone, and a soup.

In the evening, they not only serve sushi, but also about 50 kinds of a la carte dishes that are perfect for drinking. They have a particularly wide selection of fresh fish dishes, which can be enjoyed as sashimi, grilled, fried, or simmered.
The recommended dish is the "Seasonal Assortment of 8 Kinds" (4,290 yen for 2 people), which you can enjoy as sashimi of fresh fish. Popular dishes may sell out after 7pm, so if you want to try a variety of dishes, it's best to come early.

Manager Natsume Hirotaka said, "We have a lot of menu items that use fresh ingredients. In the coming season, we will have fish such as yellowtail, pufferfish, and mackerel in stock. Please come and try them."
