[Cafe near Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine] A hidden gem where you can enjoy authentic coffee and the popular "Good Luck Lunch" (Fukuoka)
Hello! I'm Yumi Kuroishi, a writer who connects the city of Fukuoka with its people.
This time, we will introduce a Japanese cafe surrounded by the warmth of an old Japanese house that you can stop by before or after visiting Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine.
This is a hidden gem where you can enjoy a homemade "good luck lunch" and their specially made original blend coffee.
Renga-ya Coffee, a hidden cafe renovated from an old Japanese house (Dazaifu City)
Renga-ya Coffee is a 5-minute walk from Nishitetsu Dazaifu Station, and is located off a prefectural road near the west gate of Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine. It opened on September 20, 2019.
This cafe is housed in a renovated traditional Japanese house that is 70 to 80 years old, and has a nostalgic atmosphere.

The interior of the store is lined with British antique furniture and soft natural light streams in, creating a cozy atmosphere where time seems to flow slowly.
There are about 20 seats at the counter and tables, plus 10 seats on the terrace, where pets are allowed. It's the perfect place to take a break during your stroll.
The owner, Minami Kazuhiro, honed his skills at Kodoan in Mitsusemura, Saga City, and Fusk Coffee in Ropponmatsu, Fukuoka City, and opened the shop with the desire to "contribute to Dazaifu, the city where he was born and raised."

Eight kinds of homemade side dishes! A gorgeous "Good Luck Lunch" made with local vegetables
The menu mainly consists of the limited-quantity "Good Luck Lunch" (1,500 yen) handmade by the owner's wife, coffee (from 600 yen) including original blends roasted by "Fusuku Coffee," and homemade sweets (from 700 yen).
This is the "Good Luck Lunch."
The luxurious set includes eight seasonal side dishes, three round rice balls, soup with crab meatballs, and salad.
It is only available during lunchtime (12:00-14:00 last orders), so please make a reservation in advance by phone.

The side dishes change depending on the season. On this day, from the left in the front row of the photo, there were "fried tofu and fried eggplant," "shiraae," "tsukudani (simmered ginger)," and "omelette roll," and from the left in the back row, there were "unohana," "sweet and spicy burdock root," "truffle-flavored potato salad," and "airfried chicken and eggplant with meat and miso."
I was impressed by the variety of dishes that made generous use of local vegetables! They don't use white sugar, but brown sugar and cane sugar, and only sesame oil is used. You can feel the attention to detail.

From left to right, the rice balls are topped with wakame seaweed stems, mentaiko sprinkled with cod roe, and yukari sprinkled with yukari. They're bite-sized and easy to eat, and each one has a different flavor, so you won't get bored of them until the very end. They were also served with pickled carrots, coffee-boiled beans, and candied sweet potatoes.

The soup, which gently spreads the delicious flavor of crab meatballs, is also excellent.

The salads are also generously sized, making them a great choice for health-conscious people.

The dish is garnished with rabbit-shaped carrots and comes with chopstick wrappers handmade by the owner's wife, and the hospitality is evident everywhere. It looks gorgeous, but it's also comforting and comforting to eat...that's the kind of lunch it is.
Lunch can also be ordered with a drink set (from an additional 350 yen).
There is also a "Good Luck Lunch Set" (2,000 yen) which includes lunch, a small dessert and a drink.
A total of 6 types of specialty coffee! The most popular is the "Rengaya Blend" named after the shop.
There are six types of coffee available: three original blends and three single origins.
The original blends include the dark roasted "Renga-ya Blend" (600 yen) with a strong bitterness and rich flavor, the classic "Dazaifu Blend" (600 yen) with an excellent balance of bitterness and acidity and easy to drink, and the fruity "Tabibito Blend" (600 yen).

This time I ordered the "Rengaya Blend." It was deep, yet surprisingly refreshing aftertaste. It was smooth and delicious even when cold.

The cup with a doorknob-like handle, custom-made by Okinawan artist Imamura Yoshiaki, is called the "Good Luck Cup" at the shop, and is said to contain the wish that "you will open the door to the next stage and move forward." Just holding it in your hand will make you feel positive!
They also have sweets that go perfectly with coffee. Recommended items are the "Cheesecake" (700 yen), made with cheese and white miso, and the "Chocolate Cake" (700 yen), which has a rich cocoa flavor.

It has an elegant taste and is easy to eat even after a meal.
