[Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine Approach Lunch] A hidden gem known only to those in the know! Affordable snacks, noodles, and sweets starting from 1,000 yen (Fukuoka)

Hello! I'm Yumi Kuroishi, a writer who connects the city of Fukuoka with its people.

This time, we will introduce you to a hidden lunch spot on the approach to Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine that only those in the know will know about!

Kasanoya (Dazaifu City), a cafe and restaurant run by a long-established Umegae Mochi shop

A three-minute walk from Nishitetsu Dazaifu Station, Kasanoya is located on the left hand side after passing through the second torii gate on the approach to Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, next to Starbucks Coffee Dazaifu Tenmangu Omotesando.

Founded in 1922, this cafe and restaurant is run by Kasa no Ie, a famous Umegae mochi shop, where you can enjoy rice bowls and sweets.

The store's appearance is reminiscent of a Kyoto townhouse.

If you go further to the right of the space selling Umegae Mochi...

I could see the door to the shop! It's truly a hidden gem known only to those in the know.

When you step inside the store, you'll be greeted by an open-ceiling space made of old wood. The calm atmosphere allows you to forget the hustle and bustle of the approach to the shrine and take a breather.

The cafe is made up of only table seating, so even if you're alone you can feel at ease and enjoy your meal or dessert in peace and quiet.

There are also seats with a view of the garden.

The reasonable prices are surprising considering it's a tourist destination! Rice bowl and dessert menu

At Kasanoya, you can enjoy four types of rice bowls, including the Oyakodon (1,300 yen), which is made with tender chicken and a soft egg, and the Konohadon (1,300 yen), which is made with shiitake mushrooms, thin fried tofu, kamaboko (fish cake), and onions.

There are also sweet treats such as the "Ume no Mi Hijiki Onigiri 2-Piece Set (with side dish and soup)" (1,000 yen), which features rice balls made with Dazaifu's specialty Ume no Mi Hijiki from "Junido Etoya," the "Matcha Set" and "Nodachi Coffee Set" (700 yen each) which come with Umegae mochi, and "Umegae Zenzai" (700 yen), a zenzai made with Umegae mochi.

One of the attractions of this restaurant is that it offers a variety of reasonably priced menu items, even though it is located in a tourist area.

The rich flavor of the broth is irresistible! The comforting specialty "Enryanse (nyumen)"

This time, we will introduce the specialty "Toryanse" (1,200 yen), which is a must-try when visiting this restaurant, and the comforting "Tamagodon (with soup)" (1,100 yen).

First up is the signature dish, "Toryanse." This noodle dish features pale pink noodles kneaded with plum, topped with Chinese cabbage, shrimp, chicken, carrots, shiitake mushrooms, eggs, white onions, and mitsuba (Japanese parsley).

The vibrant colors are so vibrant you'll want to take photos!

The broth, which is flavored with bonito flakes, also incorporates the umami of the ingredients, creating a deep, delicious taste that permeates your body.

The soft fragrance of plums wafts through the air, making this a cup that will soothe your soul. Adding the accompanying yuzu pepper gives it a sharp, tangy flavor and leaves a lingering aftertaste.

You'll be hooked on the fluffy and creamy texture of "Tamagodon"!

We also recommend the golden egg bowl (1,100 yen), which comes with a side of soup.

Although it is made with simple ingredients like eggs and onions, it is surprisingly satisfying!

The harmony of the texture of the sweetly cooked onions, the melting egg, and the gentle flavor of the broth will make you a fan after just one try.
