[Tenjin Area Izakaya] Just like Korea! A popular restaurant where you can enjoy charcoal grilled samgyeopsal and street food

Hello! I'm Yumi Kuroishi, a writer who connects the city of Fukuoka with its people.

This time, we will introduce popular restaurants where you can enjoy charcoal-grilled samgyeopsal and authentic Korean street food.

Very popular! Korean restaurant HORANGI (Watanabe-dori, Chuo-ku, Fukuoka City) is famous for its charcoal-grilled samgyeopsal.

Korean Restaurant HORANGI is located in Watanabedori, Chuo Ward, Fukuoka City, a 5-minute walk from Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) Station. It opened in October 2022.

"Horangi" means "tiger" in Korean, so the interior of the store is decorated in black and yellow.

It's a sophisticated space with tables and semi-private rooms, with a total of 20 seats. The semi-private rooms were designed to resemble zoo cages.

The owner of the restaurant is Oh Du-kyun (pictured left), who is originally from Korea. He has a proven track record of training in Japanese cuisine in Japan, Korea, and Australia. Utilizing the wealth of knowledge he has cultivated at Japanese restaurants, he opened the restaurant with the desire to "make it easy for customers to enjoy Korean street food with seasonings that Japanese people will enjoy, in an atmosphere reminiscent of a Korean izakaya."

Here is the menu. In addition to the specialty "Charcoal Grilled Samgyeopsal," they also serve authentic Korean street food that you won't often see in Korean restaurants in Fukuoka, such as "Nakji Bokkeum" (1,280 yen) and "Cheese Odolpyo" (1,080 yen).

Charcoal grill and Itoshima pork are the deciding factors! You must try the Samgyeopsal at "Horangi"

This is the restaurant's signature dish, Charcoal Grilled Samgyeopsal (1 portion 1,890 yen). *The photo shows a portion for 2 people.

The pork used is "Zero One Pork," a special brand of pork produced in Itoshima.

Typically, samgyeopsal is made by grilling the pork directly in an iron pot, but at Horangi, the staff grills it over charcoal before bringing it to you, removing excess fat and giving it a charcoal aroma.

The Charcoal Grilled Samgyeopsal comes with three sauces: rock salt, sesame oil (with pepper), and homemade samjang (Korean miso), as well as wrapped vegetables and pickled onions and chives.

Once the meat is cooked, we recommend eating it with rock salt, which allows you to directly taste the flavor of the pork!

The fragrant aroma of charcoal fills your nose, creating a unique flavor. The tender, refined fat makes it easy to eat without feeling heavy.

The meat is wrapped around vegetables such as lettuce and bok choy, and is filled with pickled chives and onions, kimchi, etc. The combination of the juicy lettuce and fragrant meat is outstanding!

There's more! Recommended Korean street food

In addition to the Charcoal Grilled Samgyeopsal, there are many other appealing menu items. We asked the owner about two dishes he recommends for the upcoming season.

This is Gopchang Jeongol (1,280 yen), a typical Korean hot pot dish made by simmering beef intestines (gopchang) and other offal with zucchini, potatoes, shimeji mushrooms, onions, and noodles.

You can choose between japchae or sari noodles for the noodles. This time, I chose japchae.

It's spicy but also has a delicious flavor, so if you like spicy food, you should definitely try it!

Another recommended dish is "Nakji Bokkeum" (1,280 yen), which is stir-fried long-fingered octopus with sweet and spicy chili pepper-based gochujang.

Under the spicy stir-fried octopus is somen noodles. Mix them together and enjoy. The more you eat, the more addictive the numbing spiciness will become!

We also have a wide selection of alcoholic drinks, including Korean liquor and lemon sours!

Horanyi also has a wide selection of drinks.

From the left in the photo, there is the "Horangi Lemon Sour" (650 yen), which is not too sweet and pairs perfectly with samgyeopsal and chicken, and the "Horangi Makgeolli Sour" (650 yen), which is made with makgeolli, a popular Korean alcoholic beverage, and has a mellow sweetness. Both are popular drinks.

There was also the Korean soju "Cero" (1,100 yen), which has been gaining popularity in recent years as a "zero sugar soju." Its clean taste makes it a perfect match for any dish.

The cute shochu glasses are also a great addition. They're sure to look great in photos!
