
[Moji Lunch] A popular restaurant serving chewy, handmade Sanuki udon noodles and crispy tempura (Kitakyushu)
Hello. I'm Momo and I love to eat.
This time, we will introduce a Sanuki udon restaurant in Moji Ward, Kitakyushu City, where customers often line up to get in.
When it comes to Sanuki udon in Kitakyushu, this is the place to go! "Honkaku Sanuki Udon Onikichi" (Nishishinmachi, Moji Ward, Kitakyushu City), a popular restaurant that boasts firm udon noodles.
"Onikichi Honkaku Sanuki Udon" is located a 7-minute drive from JR Moji Station, near Tamukeyama Park. Since opening in July 2012, it has been a hugely popular restaurant among locals.
There's a line every day before opening, and when I arrived 10 minutes before opening on Saturday, there were already three groups waiting. They're open from 11:30 to 15:00, but be aware that they may close early if they run out of noodles.
Look for this large sign with a cute demon illustration and the store name.

There are two parking lots, one in front of the store and one on the other side of the river, so it is convenient to come by car.

The moment you enter the store, you'll be greeted by the delicious aroma of dashi soup.

It's a small restaurant with only three tables that seat two to four people.

Onikichi is particular about "freshly made and freshly boiled" udon noodles. They hand-make the udon noodles that day, and boil and serve them after an order is placed. The chewy, firm texture is irresistible!
There are 34 types of udon in the lineup, divided into three categories: the authentic Sanuki classic "Bukkake" (from 627 yen), "Kake-kei Udon" with warm broth (from 572 yen), and "Tsukemen" (from 880 yen). What's more, there are 19 types of "Toppings" (from 66 yen) available, so you can customize it to your liking.
Among the "Kake-style Udon" dishes, "Curry Udon" (759 yen), which can be topped with cheese and colorful vegetables, is also popular.

If you can't decide, try this! "Onikichi Bukkake" and "Tako Rice"
I ordered the "Onikichi Bukkake" (1,100 yen), which is named after the restaurant, and it caught my eye. You can choose between cold, hot, or hot broth only. You can also get a large serving (2 balls, +198 yen).
We have also added the popular "Tako Rice (1 bowl)" (165 yen).

The two shrimp tempura are topped with shiso, sweet potato, and pumpkin tempura, making it a very filling dish! By the way, the two shrimp tempura are said to be modeled after the horns of an ogre.

The noodles are chewy and satisfying. The soup, which is rich in dashi stock, is also delicious! The noodles are perfectly intertwined with the soup, and the smooth texture is irresistible.
Mix it with the grated daikon radish and ginger that comes with it for a refreshing taste.

What's more, the tempura is freshly fried and crispy! The shrimp tempura is plump and the pumpkin tempura is sweet and delicious ♡ It's a very satisfying bowl of ramen.
By the way, the tempura is purposely battered thickly to match the udon, but they will also serve it with less batter if you request it.

This is "Takomeshi (1 bowl)" (165 yen) with a large piece of octopus inside.

The flavor of the octopus is infused into the rice, making it so delicious you won't be able to stop eating. This is rare for an udon restaurant, but it seems to attract many repeat customers who are hooked on its deliciousness.

Chicken tempura bukkake (5 pieces)
The luxurious "Toriten Bukkake" (770 yen) is bukkake udon topped with five pieces of chicken tempura.

The chewy noodles and flavorful broth were so delicious that I couldn't have eaten five of them.
Tempura and Zaru
"Tenzaru" (1,023 yen) is a set of Zaru Udon noodles and a tempura platter.
The udon and tempura are served on separate plates, so you can enjoy both chewy udon and crispier tempura.

Carbonara-style udon
The Western-style and impactful "Carbonara-style Udon" (902 yen).

It is topped with raw egg and Camembert cheese tempura. When you cut it open, the cheese melts inside.

Stir well and enjoy. The udon broth, egg, and cheese combine to create a delicious Western flavor, just like carbonara.

Take-out is also available!
In addition to "Tako rice," "Bukkake and Kake udon," and "Toppings," "Fresh noodles (with bukkake broth)" (2 servings, 648 yen) that you can boil at home is also available for takeout.
