[Hakata Area Breakfast] A hot topic on social media! A luxurious Japanese meal set with clay pot rice (Fukuoka)
Hello. I'm Shou Fujita, a gourmet writer who looks forward to breakfast more than anything else.
This time, we will introduce a popular Japanese restaurant in Reizei-cho, Hakata Ward, Fukuoka City, which is well-known for its luxurious breakfast sets.
A luxurious meal served in a minimalist space is popular! The popular Japanese restaurant "Shokudo Owan" (Reizei-cho, Hakata-ku, Fukuoka City)
Shokudo Owan is located along Reizei Street, about a 4-minute walk from Gofukumachi Station on the Hakozaki Subway Line.
This Japanese restaurant serves freshly cooked rice cooked in a clay pot, as well as a breakfast set menu featuring Spicy Fish Eggs and tamagoyaki (rolled omelette) in the morning, a satisfying daily set menu for lunch, and creative dishes using seasonal ingredients in the evening.

Keisuke Morimoto, the owner of the popular izakaya restaurants "Kobashiya" and "Koyoriyaya Sonohen," also located in Reizei Town, opened "Shokudo Owan" in April 2024 with the desire to meet the breakfast needs of the public.
It became a hot topic among discerning social media users and quickly became a popular restaurant, attracting many customers from both within Japan and overseas.

The restaurant has a total of 24 seats, including a large table that seats 10, a counter with six seats by the window, and two tables that seat four people.

It is a high-quality, minimalist space where the light pouring in through the open windows harmonizes with the greenery placed throughout.
Morimoto's wish that "people can feel the sky, greenery, light and other elements of nature and experience joy beyond just their food" is clearly expressed in the design of the restaurant's space.

Enjoy the luxurious menu at Shokudo Owan for breakfast, lunch, and dinner!
The breakfast menu, which can be enjoyed from 7:30 to 10:00 in the morning, includes the "Freshly steamed clay pot rice and Hakata Spicy Fish Eggs tasting set meal" (2,000 yen) and the "Freshly steamed clay pot rice and rolled egg set meal made with the morning's freshest dashi broth" (2,000 yen).
You can also add on Spicy Fish Eggs, rolled omelet, and sesame mackerel (available by reservation) to your choice of six different options. All of these come with a "one-person hotpot" set of clay pot rice, miso soup, four types of small hookah, tsukudani, and Yame tea.

The "Freshly cooked clay pot rice and Hakata Spicy Fish Eggs tasting meal" (2,000 yen) is a must-try for mentaiko lovers, as it allows you to compare six different types of original Spicy Fish Eggs made from Spicy Fish Eggs of the long-established "Hakata Nakasu Mukai" - normal, seared, squid, jellyfish, Chinese cabbage, and Spicy Fish Eggs roe.
There is also a "Freshly cooked clay pot rice, Hakata Spicy Fish Eggs tasting set, and small rolled omelet" (2,500 yen) available, which comes with a small rolled omelet.
Although not listed on the menu above, there are two types of mackerel set meals (both 3,500 yen) that must be reserved in advance online. These are special dishes made with fatty mackerel delivered from Nagasaki every morning and coated with a special sauce.
The lunch menu from 11:00 to 14:00 is only the "Daily Set Meal with Freshly Cooked Clay Pot Rice" (2,000 yen / 2,500 yen with mini sesame mackerel). You can choose your main dish from three options: "meat," "seafood," or "mapo tofu made with homemade soy milk tofu."

The evening menu, which starts at 5pm, offers three courses priced at 10,000 yen, 15,000 yen, and 20,000 yen, as well as a la carte dishes and the "Shokudo Owan Dinner Set" (2,800 yen), allowing you to flexibly choose according to the occasion and budget.

A satisfying start to the day! A breakfast set of rolled omelette, Spicy Fish Eggs and clay pot rice
On this day, I ordered the "Freshly steamed clay pot rice, freshly caught first-meat dashi broth, mentaiko and egg set meal" (2,500 yen).

The rolled omelet is a hearty dish made with three Kiouran eggs, a brand of eggs from Kurate Town, Fukuoka Prefecture.

It is packed with freshly made dashi stock, which oozes out from the plump egg, creating a blissful texture.

Spicy Fish Eggs is a delicacy with a bouncy texture and deep spiciness with a hint of sweetness, and it goes perfectly with eggs and rice.
When you gently open the lid of the clay pot, the sweet aroma of rice spreads along with the rising steam, revealing fluffy, glossy, freshly cooked rice. This is the most luxurious thing of all!

When cooked in a clay pot, the heat penetrates slowly and the flavor is gradually extracted, allowing you to enjoy the rice's natural deliciousness to the fullest.
The clay pot is a masterpiece of "Oishiwara ware" that Morimoto searched around for potteries in Toho Village, Fukuoka Prefecture, and had made specially for the shop.

Because the thickness and texture of each handmade rice differs, the way it cooks also differs, so the cooking method is adjusted for each clay pot.
The miso soup is made with miso from Morimoto's hometown of Saga, and its gentle sweetness and the soft texture of the vegetables are very soothing.

The bowls were intentionally designed in a shape that is not commonly found in households, and their slightly narrow mouths fit comfortably in the hand.
The four small dishes that change daily are made with seasonal vegetables and are designed to go well with rice. The [Boiled Komatsuna] has a refined taste that brings out the flavor of the dashi stock.

On this day, we also had the [Pickled Purple Cabbage and Kelp in Sweet and Sour Sauce], which has an excellent balance of sweet and sour flavors, the smooth [Potato Tuna Salad], and the comforting and soothing [Fried Tofu Namul].

The handmade tsukudani is made with clams, shiso leaves, and king oyster mushrooms, and is accented by the crunchy texture of the clams and the sharp spiciness of the ginger.

After your meal, take a break with some cold Yame tea from Nakajima Seicha Honpo, a long-established tea shop in Yame City.

Its elegant and light taste with almost no bitterness leaves a refreshing finish to your after-meal.

At Shokudo Owan, you can enjoy a luxurious breakfast meal and relax in a sophisticated atmosphere.
It is a dining space that caters to all five senses, bringing a sense of quiet satisfaction to your morning. (Text by Sho Fujita)
