A cafe in the sky! Enjoy a wagyu steak lunch with a breathtaking view at an altitude of 350m (Sasaguri Town)

Hello. I'm Shou Fujita, a gourmet writer who aspires to live a life close to nature.

This time, we will introduce you to a spectacular spot where you can enjoy a wagyu steak lunch in a modern Japanese space reminiscent of an art museum.

Modern Japanese architecture deep in the mountains! Sabo Warabino, a work of art

About 40 minutes by car from the center of Fukuoka city, Sabo Warabino sits quietly on the side of Mt. Wakasugi in Sasaguri-machi, Kasuya-gun.

From the parking lot along the road, you can climb the moss-covered stone steps to

A modern and elegant glass building emerges from the forest.

Sabo Warabino is a tranquil cafe space opened in 2007 by the Warabino Group, which produces numerous restaurants within the prefecture.

The owner, a former chef, wanted to create a space that would make guests feel as if they were surrounded by the mountains, and he spent around seven years building the restaurant while also working in civil engineering.

As soon as you step inside, you'll find a picturesque, artistic space where sophisticated interiors and artworks blend beautifully together.

Ms. Kuboyama, who graduated from an art school and was involved in the construction as a coordinator, was impressed by the owner's grand vision and continues to work closely with the shop as its proprietress even after it was completed.

A spectacular panoramic view! A special seat overlooking the city and nature!

The second floor seating, accessible at the top of the stairs, is a special seating area where you can sit on comfortable sofas and enjoy a magnificent panoramic view of nature.

The altitude is approximately 350 meters, almost the same height as the peak of Mt. Tachibana, which can be seen from the window.

The large windows offer a refreshing view of Fukuoka's cityscape, mountains, and Hakata Bay.

In spring, the Fujizakura cherry blossoms bloom on the giant tree weighing approximately 8 tons, and in autumn the entire area is painted in brilliant red leaves.

Apparently, there are many visitors who visit every season just to catch a glimpse of the scenery that changes with each season.

The recommended time to visit is around 11am when the air is clear, but you can enjoy the dramatic scenery any time of the day, with the water in the rice fields sparkling during the day and the planes disappearing into dots of light at night.

The sofa seats can be reserved for dining, and some people use them for celebrations or proposals.

There is a grand piano floating near the stairs, and on Saturdays and Sundays after 6pm you can listen to live piano music (there is a 500 yen music charge).

Introducing a luxurious Wagyu beef steak lunch to be enjoyed with a spectacular view!

There are plenty of intriguing cafe menu items, such as "Chilled Baked Apple with Honey Vanilla" (1,100 yen) and "Dried Persimmon, Edamame, and Cheese Sandwich with Shiraae Sauce" (800 yen), but on this day I ordered the "Wagyu A5 Round Steak 100g" (4,500 yen) from the lunch menu.

The main steak is made from the inner round of Kyushu Wagyu beef, which offers the deep flavor of high-quality red meat.

The meat is consistently grilled by a talented chef, who the proprietress, Kuboyama, says, "The meat he grills is really delicious."

The meat is soft yet chewy, and the rich sweetness of the onion sauce and the subtle spiciness of the wasabi sauce make for a refreshing taste.

Another great thing about them is that they are cut into bite-sized pieces, so you can carefully savor each bite with chopsticks.

The salad on this day was "Prosciutto and Spinach Salad," colorfully presented with fresh vegetables and fruits.

The spinach is produced in Fukuoka Prefecture and has no bitter or harsh taste, making it a refreshing dish that can be enjoyed with the lemon dressing, making it a perfect pairing with steak.

The pasta is "Japanese-style cold new burdock pasta" made with gluten-free, low-sugar noodles.

A light and elegant dish with chewy low-sugar noodles and crispy fried burdock root. The light Japanese-style sauce has a pleasant aftertaste that will make you want to drink it all up.

The fragrant "Mixed rice with dried baby sardines and Japanese pepper" further enhances the flavor of the steak.

The combination of glossy cooked rice, slightly sweet dried baby sardines, and refreshing Japanese pepper is a perfect match for steak.

The "New Potato Soup" is made without using cream or butter and is based on Japanese dashi, giving it a thick yet light finish.

This cup of soup has a simple flavor and just the right amount of saltiness that blends gently with the sweetness of the green onions.

The "Almond Tofu Palate Cleanser" is an elegant dish that combines melt-in-your-mouth almond tofu with sweet and sour organic strawberry sauce.

For dessert, I ordered "Baked Cheesecake with Orange" and "Ureshino Earl Grey" as my drink of choice.

The cheesecake has a smooth texture and is not too sweet, with the richness of the cheese and a gentle acidity that spreads softly in your mouth.

Earl Grey from Ureshino, Saga Prefecture is a refreshing and elegant black tea with a gorgeous bergamot aroma. It has a clear taste without any bitterness remaining on the tongue, and you can continue to drink it gently.

At Sabo Warabino, you can enjoy a luxurious time surrounded by breathtaking views and attentive hospitality.

Located in a historic mountain area lined with millennium cedars, this cafe blends in with nature and is a place we hope will continue to exist for another 100 years. (Text by Sho Fujita)
