[Ohashi Lunch] A curry enthusiast recommends this popular restaurant in Fukuoka where you can enjoy delicious curry and cakes!
Hello! We are Taiki Beef Curry, and we are always searching for delicious curry!
This time, we went to "Kabocha-ya", a small cafe near "Ohashi Minami Park", about a 10-minute walk from Nishitetsu Ohashi Station!
Enjoy curry and cake at the cozy cafe "Kabocha-ya" (Ohashi, Minami-ku, Fukuoka)
"Kabocha-ya" is a restaurant where you can enjoy curry and cake.
Although I wasn't able to take any photos inside the restaurant this time, there are counter seats and table seats, so you can relax and enjoy your meal whether you're alone or with a group.
Here is the menu.
There are nine types of curry available, including "Pumpkin Curry" (935 yen) and "Soup Curry" (1,045 yen), and there are also many toppings to choose from, giving you plenty of freedom in creating your own combinations.
I ordered the "Kabocha-ya Set" which included a choice of curry, cake, and drink (price of curry plus 825 yen).
The cake menu is written on a blackboard on the wall.
On this day, there were six kinds of cakes available, including some made with fresh seasonal fruits.
While I was thinking about which cake to eat, the salad was brought out. *Salad is always served with the curry.
From the "Curry of your choice" I chose "Chicken Cutlet Curry" (1,100 yen).
Perhaps because it's in the restaurant's name, I had a sudden craving for pumpkin, so I topped it with "Deep-fried Pumpkin" (220 yen) and "Bitter Melon Thoren" (220 yen).
An exquisite curry made over a long period of time using plenty of ingredients.
A good curry is based on the savory and sweet flavors of meat and vegetables.
I believe that a delicious curry is one that adds saltiness, sourness, bitterness and spiciness as accents from curry ingredients and spices, allowing you to fully experience the five tastes (six if umami is added).
Kabocha-ya's curry is made with a base of slowly simmered chicken stock, high-quality butter, a homemade roux made by simmering plenty of vegetables, and a homemade blend of 22 kinds of spices, and is then slowly simmered.
While the curry is mild overall, it still has a strong chicken flavor, and is accented with the sweetness of the vegetables and spices. Another fun thing about it is that you can customize the curry to your liking with the wide range of toppings available.
The deep-fried pumpkin topping was cut into larger pieces than I expected, but it was cooked slowly, resulting in a soft and fluffy texture and a very sweet flavor.
The "Chicken Cutlet" is made from Kyushu chicken that has been marinated thoroughly in our homemade salt koji, resulting in a crispy outside and a moist, tender inside. This is the power of salt koji.
"Goya Toren" is a seasonal topping.
"Thoren" is a spicy steamed vegetable dish that is commonly made in the southern Indian state of Kerala.
The flavor and crunchy texture of bitter melon, unique to this season, added a bitterness to Kabocha-ya's curry, making it a nice accent.
Delicious seasonal cakes made by his wife, who used to be a pastry chef in Tokyo
For dessert after the meal, we had "Gâteau au Chocolat".
Made with chocolate from Valrhona, France, it has a rich cocoa aroma and a slight bitterness, and won't weigh you down even after a curry.
The set drink is "Blended Coffee".
It goes well with "Gâteau au Chocolat" and is refreshing, clean and easy to drink.
The curry and cake shop "Kabocha-ya" is run by a team of a husband in charge of curry and a wife in charge of cake.
Apparently his wife previously worked as a pastry chef at a French pastry shop in Tokyo.
Although made by different people, the curry and cake had a beginning, development, twist and conclusion, just like a course meal. (Text by Taiki Beef Curry)
