A line of over 100 people on the first day! A popular bakery from Hokkaido that is making its first appearance in Fukuoka City (Hashimoto, Nishi Ward)

Hello! I'm Hakata Aya, a writer who loves hot information about Fukuoka.

A popular Hokkaido bakery that has been garnering attention even before it opened has finally opened its doors♪

Let us introduce you to some exciting new stores.

The first in Fukuoka City! Hokkaido's popular bakery "Penguin Bakery Hashimoto Ekimae Branch" (Hashimoto, Nishi Ward, Fukuoka City)

Penguin Bakery Hashimoto Ekimae store opened on April 19, 2024.

It is a 4-minute walk from Hashimoto Station on the Nanakuma Subway Line, making it a convenient location for stopping by before or after shopping at Konoha Mall Hashimoto (about 1 minute by car). There is a parking lot, so it is easy to visit by car.

Originally, the company only operated in Hokkaido, but with the desire to have people try its products all over the country, it began expanding into a franchise in January 2021.

This popular restaurant has a reputation throughout the region for offering a wide variety of menu items, including freshly baked bread made with wheat from Hokkaido, as well as Hokkaido's soul food, fried chicken "Zangi."

The Penguin Bakery Hashimoto Ekimae branch that I'd like to introduce this time is the first store in Fukuoka City! It was a long-awaited opening, and on the first day I visited, there was a line of over 100 people, even though it was a weekday.

Currently, there are two stores in Fukuoka Prefecture. The other one is the "Tobata Store" in Kitakyushu.

A cute and pop store filled with penguins, with about 80 kinds of freshly baked bread on display!

The inside of the store is spacious. About 80 kinds of bread are lined up along the walls and in the center. Freshly baked bread was being brought out one after another from the kitchen in the back.

I'd like to introduce some of the things that caught my eye out for.

The popular "Penguin Bread" (290 yen) is filled with melted chocolate and is perfect as a snack. Above all, it looks cute!

Sapporo's soul food "Chikuwa Bread" (260 yen) is a savory bread with canned tuna and mayonnaise inside a chikuwa. Apparently, Sapporo residents sometimes eat it for breakfast. Both the dough and the chikuwa are very chewy!

The signature product is the "Flying Bread" (1 loaf 370 yen, 2 loaves (1 piece) 700 yen).

Made with 100% Hokkaido-grown "Yumechikara" wheat. It's great that it's made without any eggs, dairy products, honey, butter or margarine!

The "Shrimp Curry Bread Fondue" (360 yen, photo on the left), which has won the gold award at the "Curry Bread Grand Prix (R)" (sponsored by the Japan Curry Bread Association) for four consecutive years and received the highest gold award in 2022, is a dish that you should definitely try.

The special curry roux with sweet shrimp oil and cheese fondue melted in my mouth, and the richness and flavor of the curry and the plump texture of the shrimp were absolutely delicious.

"Hokkaido Beef Curry Bread Fondue" (360 yen) was also on sale!

Not just bread! Check out Hokkaido's specialty "Zangi"

Among the many breads on display, the Hokkaido specialty, "Zangi Skewers" (390 yen each) sits proudly.

It's unusual enough to see fried chicken lined up in a bakery, but there's actually more to it than that.

Amazingly, this "Zangi Kushi"won the gold award twice, at the 13th and 15th Karaage Grand Prix (sponsored by the Japan Fried Chicken Association), which decides "the best fried chicken shop in Japan." At the 15th event, out of 753 fried chicken shops nationwide that entered, this was the only bakery to win the gold award, making it an amazing dish!

Hokkaido's "Zangi" (fried chicken) is a soul food that is eaten not only as a standard side dish but also on all sorts of occasions, including celebratory occasions.

This "Zangi skewer" is marinated overnight in a secret salt sauce that is rich in flavor and umami, and then deep-fried twice to make it crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. It has a strong flavor and is delicious even when cooled.

They also sell other prepared foods such as "Street-style Fried Noodles" (350 yen) and "Penguin Cafe's Thick Noodle Neapolitan" (350 yen), so it's a great place to stop by when you want an extra dish for lunch or dinner!
