A new attraction in Ureshino Onsen! A cafe where you can also enjoy afternoon tea: "Made in Pierre Hermé Wataya Besso"

Hello. I'm ayu.latte, a writer who loves delicious sweets and food.

This time, we will introduce a popular cafe that has opened in Ureshino Onsen.

A cafe space opens at the long-established inn "Made in Pierre Hermé Wataya Villa"

Wataya Besso is a long-established inn located on a vast 67,000m2 site in Ureshino Onsen, Saga Prefecture.

"Made in Pierre Hermé" is a concept brand that promotes "wonderful Japanese products" carefully selected by the world-famous French pastry chef Pierre Hermé from Japan to the world.

A cafe space where you can enjoy this deliciousness, "Made in Pierre Hermé Wataya Villa," opened on July 1, 2023.

This is an open space overlooking the Japanese garden, "Hakoniwa," located just inside the inn entrance.

The cloud-themed lanterns by lantern artist Mikami Maki are impressive.

In addition to counter seats,

There are tables where you can relax.

"Afternoon tea" where you can fully enjoy Ureshino tea

What I'm looking for is the "Afternoon Tea" that can only be enjoyed here (5,500 yen per person. Orders can be made from one person). Reservations are required and there are two sessions (120 minutes) starting from 11:30 and 14:00.

The set includes 2 types of macarons + 3 types of sweets + 3 types of savory dishes (seasonal dishes) + chocolate + drinks.

In addition to incorporating special seasonal ingredients, you can enjoy Ureshino tea from Kitano Tea Farm, which has been cultivating organic produce without relying on chemical fertilizers or pesticides for about 35 years.

Also pay attention to how it is served! Instead of a tea stand, it is served on "okamochi" (rice cake).

It was conceived by the president of Wataya Besso and built by the inn's carpenters.

The tableware is original white porcelain by Hizen Yoshida-yaki maker '224porcelain'. The cute and detailed presentation is sure to get you excited ♡

The menu changes depending on the season and what's available, but here I'll introduce what was on offer on the day I visited.

2 types of macarons

You can choose your favorite two types of macarons.

In addition to "Ureshino Sencha," "Ureshino Houjicha," "Ureshino Genmaicha," "Chocolate," and "Rose," the lineup will include "Olive" and "Setouchi Lemon" during the "Setouchi Fair" until August 31, 2023.

I selected "Olive" and "Ureshino Houjicha", which were served in cloud-shaped containers.

"Olive" uses extra virgin olive oil from Shodoshima. The elegant and light flavor of the olive is a perfect match with the sweetness of the vanilla.

"Ureshino Hojicha" uses roasted green tea from "Kitano Tea Garden". It is sandwiched with a generous amount of ganache made from tea leaves. The fragrant flavor was irresistible.

3 types of sweets

The three sweets on this day, clockwise from the top left in the photo, were "Lemon Cheesecake," "Wataya Bessou Exclusive Chocolate Terrine," and "Anseikan Gateau Basque."

The "Chocolate Terrine" comes in two varieties, using roasted green tea and sencha from Kitano Tea Garden. The flavor of the tea fills your mouth, making it delicious!

The "Anseikan Gateau Basque" uses the Anseikan citrus fruit, which originated in Innoshima, Hiroshima Prefecture, and is characterized by its subtle sourness, bitterness, and refreshing sweetness. You can enjoy the harmony of the refreshing taste and custard.

The "Lemon Cheesecake" has a refreshing taste the moment you put it in your mouth. The smooth cheesecake and fluffy sponge cake have a great texture.

3 types of savory dishes (seasonal dishes)

The savory course is a 3-item assortment packed with the chef's specialties from Wataya Besso. This changes daily.

On this day, the menu consisted of three dishes: Temari sushi (Saga beef, grunt) / Mozzarella Caprese, Grissini wrapped in prosciutto / Shrimp and avocado cream tartlet / Salmon and cream cheese tartlet, and Croissant sandwich (smoked duck).

Everything was delicious.

If you let them know in advance what you don't like, they will do their best to accommodate you.

Drink

Afternoon tea drinks are all-you-can-drink.

You can choose from Sencha, Black Tea, and Mint Green Tea from Kitano Tea Garden, and coffee from Andalusia Farm in El Salvador (available hot or iced).

This is iced mint green tea. The moment I put it in my mouth, I felt a refreshing sensation. It was an addictive taste!

This is iced "coffee." Its rich flavor and bitter taste was the perfect match for sweets.

There's more! Recommended menu items

In addition to Afternoon Tea, we also offer a range of casual cafe menu items.

This is the "Ureshino Genmaicha Soft Serve Ice Cream" (880 yen). This rich soft serve ice cream is made with milk from Hokkaido and is topped with crispy lemon-flavored macaroons, crunchy caramel chocolate, and Ureshino Genmaicha powder. The change in texture was also fun.

In addition, the "Anseikan Gateau Basque" (660 yen *until August 31, 2023) and "Lemon Cheesecake" (605 yen), which were featured in the afternoon tea, can also be ordered as individual items.

Be sure to check out the "Lemon Soda with Strawberry Jelly" (693 yen), available only on weekends until August 31, 2023. The refreshing sweet and sour taste and chewy jelly texture are also fun to eat.

A perfect treat for yourself or as a souvenir!

Prior to the opening of this cafe, a take-out store called "Made in Pierre Hermé Wataya Villa" was opened in November 2021 as the highlight of the hot spring inn innovation project "Reborn Wataya Project."

There will be about 30 items on display, including carefully selected products from all over Japan and products made in collaboration with producers. Among them is organically grown Ureshino tea!
