Enjoy luxurious shaved ice that can only be enjoyed now! A popular shop in Kokura where you can enjoy Japanese tea and Japanese sweets in a stylish space (Kitakyushu City)
Hello, I'm ayu.latte, a writer who loves delicious food.
This time, we will introduce the summer menu of a Japanese cafe where you can spend a relaxing time.
"Shunkachasha Hitotoki" is a seasonal Japanese sweets and tea shop where you can enjoy takeout on the first floor and eat-in on the second floor (Bakashi, Kokurakita Ward, Kitakyushu City)
"Shunkachasha Hitotoki" is a 10-minute walk from JR Kokura Station and a 2-minute walk from Kitakyushu Monorail Tanga Station. This shop offers carefully selected Japanese tea and handmade seasonal Japanese sweets.
The first floor is a sales space for Japanese sweets, Japanese tea, and Japanese black tea.
The second floor is a cafe space with both table and counter seating, so even if you're alone you can feel free to stop by.
Each table was decorated with seasonal flowers, a subtle gesture of hospitality that I really enjoyed.
A luxurious moment enjoying a course of Japanese sweets and tea
The cafe offers a variety of a la carte dishes, but the recommended course is the Japanese tea course.
There are two courses available: the "Relaxation Course" (1,450 yen), which includes a selection of teas to choose from a wide variety of menu items such as gyokuro, sencha, Japanese black tea, roasted green tea, and flavored tea, as well as a bite-sized appetizer, one confectionery of the day, and pickles; and the "Day and Season Course" (2,100 yen), which adds a special fresh dessert to the contents of the Relaxation Course.
On this day, I ordered the "Daily and Seasonal Course." I'll introduce the contents to you.
Appetizer
The appetizer that was brought out was "Maple Flavored Walnut Candy." The walnuts were coated with maple and had a gentle sweetness.
Today's sweets
When you open the wooden box decorated with seasonal flowers...
There were five kinds of Japanese sweets lined up.
The contents change depending on the day, but on this day, clockwise from the top left, there were "Floating Island of Japanese Black Tea," "Matcha Bean Butter Bun," "Floating Island of Cocoa," "Kuzu Neri Tea Ten," and "Minazuki." You can choose one of them.
I chose "Kuzu Neri Tea Ten," which uses a generous amount of high-quality matcha from Yame.
On the first floor, these Japanese sweets are only available for pre-order (1 day in advance, 1,280 yen for a wooden box of four), but you can enjoy them as part of the Japanese tea course!
It has a rich, fragrant, slightly bitter and elegant taste of matcha. The smooth, bouncy texture was also irresistible.
My companion chose the "Ukishima Wakocha (Japanese Black Tea)," a steamed mixture of white bean paste, rice flour, and Yakushima black tea.
It is brought to you in a steamer, and when you open the lid, steam rises out.
Soft and fluffy! After the gentle sweetness of the white bean paste, the aroma of Japanese black tea fills your mouth. The rum raisins and lemon peel toppings add a nice accent.
It comes with lemon paste on the side, so try dipping it in for a different experience.
Drink
You can choose one drink from the tea menu.
When you order sencha or matcha, they will carefully brew it for you in the area with the kettle, which is fun to watch.
Currently, there are also drinks available only during the summer (until the end of September 2023).
This is the classic "Iced Matcha Latte" with a beautiful green gradation and plenty of matcha jelly at the bottom.
Adding more matcha to the matcha sauce provided gives it an even richer flavor.
This is a new product only available in the summer, "Fruit Hojicha." This iced Hojicha tea has a fragrant aroma and is filled with frozen fruit! By the time I finished drinking the Hojicha tea, the fruit had melted nicely and was very enjoyable.
Special fresh sweets
The special fresh dessert for this season is chilled "peach sweet soup." The fruity sweetness of seasonal peaches is excellent.
The accompanying shiratama (rice flour dumplings) and hojicha warabi mochi (roasted green tea warabi mochi) go perfectly with the peach flavor. It's very refreshing.
Pickles
The last pickles brought out were three types: "Pickled mountain jellyfish in Matsumae sauce," "Grilled fungus in walnut miso," and "Pickled radish in lemon." Each was a perfect way to finish off the meal, leaving the mouth feeling refreshed.
We enjoyed plenty of drinks and Japanese sweets and had a luxurious time.
Be sure to check out the new summer-only menu item, "Ice Confectionery"!
In addition to the courses, there are two other not to be missed menu items available for a limited time until the end of September 2023.
First up is the "Matcha Mont Blanc, Shiratama, and Kudzu Pastry Ice" (1,350 yen).
The fluffy milk ice is topped with a generous amount of Mont Blanc with rich matcha bean paste. It is garnished with chewy shiratama (rice flour dumplings), bean paste, and the aforementioned "Kuzu Neri Tea Ten." This is a luxurious shaved ice that allows you to enjoy a variety of textures and flavors.
The other is "Peach and Shiratama Ice Cream" (1,500 yen).
The gently sweet milk ice is topped with delicious homemade peach sauce and garnished with plenty of peach and cherry blossom mochi.
What's great is that peaches can be enjoyed in two flavors: as a lightly sweet compote and as fresh peaches!
"Shunkasasha Hi to Toki" has a full lineup of summer menus. Why not go and check it out? (Text by ayu.latte)
