Great for families with children! "Coffee shop and free drinks available" A bookstore in the middle of Tenjin (Chuo-ku, Fukuoka City)
Hello! I'm Hakata Aya, a writer who loves hot information about Fukuoka.
This time, we will introduce Bunkitsu Fukuoka Tenjin, a bookstore located on the 7th floor of the main building of Iwataya Main Store, which reopened on September 1, 2024 with the theme of "a place of relaxation that satisfies both body and mind." We will bring you all the charms of this store!
From the interior layout to the cafe menu and usage plans, it has become a more user-friendly and relaxing space than ever before.
Renovated in September 2024! Bunkitsu Fukuoka Tenjin (Tenjin, Chuo-ku, Fukuoka City) is now even more user-friendly and comfortable
Bunkitsu is a little different from your average bookstore. Its biggest feature is that it has a paid area where you have to pay an admission fee.
In front of the store is a free area where magazines and picture books are sold and special exhibitions are regularly held.
Further in, there is a paid area.
Inside, there is a "Reading Room," a "Children's Book Room," and a "Coffee Room," where you can relax and read, study, or work while enjoying free refills of coffee, green tea, or rooibos tea. It is also recommended for those who want to quietly face a book, or those who want to find a rare book that is hard to find anywhere else.
The fees for the paid areas are as follows. With this renewal, in addition to the previous "All-day Use Plan (10:00-20:00)," a "2-hour Use Plan" is now available regardless of the day of the week, making it easier to use.
weekdays
Adults: 2 hours 1,100 yen / full day 2,200 yen
Junior and senior high school students: 770 yen for 2 hours / 1,155 yen for the whole day
Elementary school students: 550 yen for 2 hours / 825 yen for the whole day
Children under elementary school age: Free
Weekends and Holidays
Adults: 2 hours 1,650 yen / full day 2,530 yen
Junior and senior high school students: 1,100 yen for 2 hours / 1,650 yen for the whole day
Elementary school students: 825 yen for 2 hours / 1,238 yen for the whole day
Children under elementary school age: Free
Considering how fulfilling the paid area is, it seems surprisingly reasonable. In addition, there is also a "2-hour plan with dessert" (1,650 yen for adults on weekdays, 2,200 yen on weekends and holidays) and a "Lunch plan" (2,420 yen for adults, available from 10:00 to 15:00) that is only available on weekdays.
Please be aware that if you use the facility beyond 3pm for the "Lunch Plan" or beyond two hours for the "2-hour Plan", you will be automatically charged the full-day rate.
Approximately 30,000 different books! The "paid area" is attractive for its free selection of books not bound by genre.
The attraction of the paid admission area, where about 30,000 books are lined up, is that no two books are the same. Each book at Bunkitsu is sold individually, so unlike a regular bookstore, there are no multiple copies of the same book.
You can read the books on the benches or in the coffee room inside the store, or you can purchase them.
The selection of books is also carefully crafted, with books of the same subject, from manga to specialized books, all gathered in one place, regardless of genre.
For example, the bookshelf in the photo below. The area where the covers are lined up in front, called a face display, is a special display that deepens your knowledge of the subject as you go to the books behind it. It can also be a reference when you are interested in a subject but don't know what kind of book to pick up.
The enclosed space in the center of the photo below is the "Children's Book Room." Enter through an arched entrance.
There is a stroller parking area next to the entrance.
You have to take off your shoes before entering, so it looks like a great place for parents and children to relax!
This is the "Reading Room" at the very back. Each seat is separated, so you can concentrate on your work or reading in a quiet space. It is equipped with power outlets and free Wi-Fi, so it is also recommended for those looking for a co-working space!
A coffee shop where you can take a break in a retro-modern space
One thing to note about this renewal is the "Coffee House" located just inside the paid area. The retro-modern design creates a cozy space where you feel as if time has stopped. With the "Coffee House" at the center, the number of seats in the paid area has been expanded from 150 to 170.
The coffee shop-like atmosphere is perfect for reading.
The menu has been completely revamped with this renewal. Food items include "Omuhayashi Plate" (1,210 yen), "Taco Rice" (1,210 yen), "European-style Beef Curry" (1,100 yen), "Mixed Sandwich" (680 yen), and "Children's Lunch" (780 yen). Desserts include "Homemade Custard Pudding" (638 yen), "Gâteau Chocolat and Vanilla Ice Cream" (660 yen), "Baked Goods" (various types 250 to 350 yen), as well as "Today's Fruit Jelly" (680 yen) and "Coffee Anmitsu" (780 yen), which are somehow nostalgic.
This time I had the "Smoked Salmon Open Sandwich" (1,100 yen).
The fragrant salmon and cream cheese go perfectly together. It's perfect for when you're feeling a bit hungry, or as a late breakfast or lunch.
"Today's Fruit Jelly" - the jelly on this day was apple! They offer different jellies every month, so it seems like you can have fun no matter when you go ♪ I was able to enjoy reading and eating in a relaxed atmosphere!
Members of the culture school "Gaku IWATAYA" can enjoy the facility for free on class days. Please visit Bunkitsu Fukuoka Tenjin, which is full of various fun things to do. (Text by Aya Hakata)
