Kids will love it! Come empty-handed and beginners are welcome to try smelt fishing (Mitsuse Village, Saga Prefecture)
Hello. I'm Yuri and I love going out with my kids.
This time, we will introduce nature experience and activity spots in Saga City that parents and children can enjoy together.
If you want to enjoy fishing with your kids, this is the place to go! Kitayama Dam's boat rental shop "Fishing Center Uoman" (Saga City)
Fishing Center Uoman is a boat rental shop at Kitayama Dam, located along Prefectural Route 275 in Mitsuse Village, Saga City.

After passing through the Mitsuse Tunnel toll road, drive for about 7 minutes to arrive.
You can rent a boat here and enjoy fishing for black bass, smelt, and other fish.

This time, I went smelt fishing with my family.
Even beginners can feel at ease ♡ Try smelt fishing for the first time with your children!
At Kitayama Dam, you can enjoy smelt fishing for a limited time from October to April. *Depending on the temperature and conditions of the year.
When you arrive, first check in at Fishing Center Uoman.
There are two types of boats for smelt fishing: rowboats and motorized hand-powered electric boats. The price varies depending on the number of people on the boat (3,000 to 7,000 yen).

Our family used a "hand electric boat" (7,000 yen/up to 3 adults *2 children under 12 years old are counted as 1 adult), which can be operated without a boat license.
You can bring your own fishing rod and other equipment, but you can also rent all the necessary equipment, such as a fishing reel (400 yen), bait (300 yen), one fishing tackle (400 yen), and a bucket (100 yen), so you can come empty-handed and enjoy the experience♪

Please make sure to wear a life jacket. You can rent one for free.

It seems that smelt are easier to catch in the morning, so I recommend going in the morning.
At first, the staff gave us some tips on how to catch fish, so even beginners can feel at ease.

There was still snow on this day and the scenery was amazing.

Let's get on the boat and set off!

I attached the bait as instructed by the staff, let the fishing line sink to the bottom of the lake, and waited for a few minutes.
This was our first attempt at smelt fishing, so we didn't think it would be that easy, but perhaps...!?

When I caught five fish at once, I got really excited♪

I feel a sense of accomplishment!
Even adults will be excited by this rare and extraordinary experience.
Since it wasn't a big fish, it was surprisingly easy to remove the smelt I had caught.
My second daughter seemed very interested in the live fish.

I thought everything was going well, but then when I tried to reel it in, the fishing rod got tangled and I had a lot of trouble (lol).
As a result, we only managed to catch about 30 fish in 3 hours, but that was also a good memory!

When we returned from the boat, the staff inspected the smelt to make sure there were no hooks left.

The tour ends with a commemorative photo being taken.

The smelt you caught can be fried as is.
If you take the smelt you catch to "Sumibi-yaki Tanbon" (Mitsusemura, Saga City), which is a five-minute drive away, you can deep-fry it yourself and eat it on the spot.

They will lend you a "Deep-fried Smelt Set" (1,000 yen) that includes everything you need to make deep-fried smelt, including a portable stove, pot, oil, potato starch, a small plate, and kitchen paper. Cooking and eating it yourself is one of the best parts of the experience!

The exterior is crispy and the inside is crunchy.

After all, catching a fish yourself is something special!

I was able to enjoy a special time.
