[Near Karato Market] A stylish cafe with delicious sweets worth visiting (Shimonoseki City)

Hello, I'm ayu.latte, a writer who loves stylish cafes.

This time, we traveled all the way to Yamaguchi Prefecture and did some cafe fun.

Just a 5-minute walk from Karato Market! Stylish cafe "ROY x Ritsurin Confectionery Laboratory" (Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture)

"ROY x Ritsurin Confectionery Laboratory" is located a 5-minute walk from Karato Market in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture. It is also close to the tourist spot "Ganryu Island" and "Karato Terminal", where sightseeing boats depart.

It opened as "ROY" in 2022. Now in its fourth year, it has been reborn as "ROY x Kuribayashi Confectionery Laboratory."

"Kuribayashi Confectionery Laboratory" is a shop run by Chef Kuribayashi that has been serving croissants and other treats since ROY opened.

Chef Kuribayashi has an impressive track record, having served as the first head pastry chef at a five-star inn in Oita, which is visited by people from all over Japan, and also placing fourth in the 2022 National Western Confectionery Skills Competition.

The shop originally operated as "Kurinoki Sweets Workshop" in Hita, Oita, but when it moved to Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi, it changed its name to "Kuribayashi Confectionery Laboratory," and now it is run together with "ROY."

When you enter the store, you'll see a row of cute baked goods made by Chef Kuribayashi.

The sight of each piece carefully arranged like a piece of jewelry builds anticipation.

You can order take-out or eat-in sweets at this counter. Payment is required in advance.

The eat-in space is very open. In addition to a large shared table in the center, there is one two-seater table, six counter seats, and picturesque side-by-side seats. The interior, which the owner himself purchased overseas, is also lovely.

Once you've placed your order, you'll be given a cute animal figurine. This will be your numbered ticket, so please place it on the table once you've found your seat.

The seasonal strawberry menu is irresistible!

Currently, three types of strawberry menu items are available for a limited time until around May.

This time, I ordered strawberry sweets as the main dish.

Crepes (1,500 yen)

It's a very cute dessert with four crepes stacked on top of each other and plenty of fresh cream and strawberries on top! I paired it with a simple "Coffee" (600 yen).

The crepes are light and chewy! Four crepes might seem like a lot, but the whipped cream is light and not too sweet, so you can eat them all in no time.

Strawberry shortcake (2,200 yen with drink)

This shortcake is actually a secret menu item that is not on the menu! Just say, "Strawberry shortcake, please" ♡

This shop takes orders for whole cakes (starting from 5,000 yen) by reservation only, and they decided to add this to the menu as the first of their "chef's whims" in order to let people know how delicious it is.

You can choose your favorite drink from the menu (hot green tea is not included). This time, I chose "Iced Coffee."

The cakes made by Chef Kuribayashi are characterised by their delicate sweetness, and you can tell they were made with great care.

The fluffy sponge was topped with fluffy, lightly sweet whipped cream! The fresh strawberries and strawberry jam were distributed in a perfect balance, making it absolutely delicious.

Kuribayashi Confectionery Laboratory Collaboration Parfait (2,000 yen)

The collaboration parfait is a luxurious creation made using rusks that are also sold in the store.

The moist and gently sweet cream and the crispy rusks create a perfect balance. This is a recommended menu for those who care not only about taste but also about appearance.

Sweets other than strawberries too!

Pound cake (700 yen)

The pound cake used to be cocoa flavored, but is now plain. The shop's name, "ROY," is written on it in powdered sugar.

This simple pound cake allows you to enjoy the natural flavor of the ingredients, and is served simply with fresh cream. It's moist and goes perfectly with any drink.

Einspener (700 yen)

The pound cake is paired with "Einspänner," bitter coffee topped with plenty of fresh cream. It's a great pairing with simple sweets.

There are many other drinks and sweets available at ROY x Kuribayashi Confectionery Laboratory. "I would be happy if this becomes a cafe where you can relax with a book in hand," says the owner.

Karato aims to become "Japan's leading waterfront city." Hoshino Resorts is also planning to open accommodation in the Arcaport area, so this is sure to become an area to keep an eye on.
