[Cafes near Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine] A new sensation: baked mochi filled with bean paste and chocolate! Exquisite sweets from a collaboration between long-established shops (Fukuoka)

Hello! I'm Yumi Kuroishi, a writer who connects the city of Fukuoka with its people.

This time, we will introduce a new type of sweet that combines Japanese and Western flavors and can be enjoyed at a cafe on the approach to Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine.

Check out the art too! Cafe Kasanoya (Dazaifu City): A relaxing space with a Taisho-era romantic atmosphere

Located just a two-minute walk from Nishitetsu Dazaifu Station, Cafe Kasanoya is a cafe space that opened in December 2020 at Tenugui-ya, a specialty tenugui shop run by Kasa-no-ie, a famous shop for Umegae-mochi.

It is located beyond the second torii gate on the approach to Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, next to Umbrella House.

If you go down the corridor on the left side of the entrance to "Tenogoi-ya", you will see the entrance to the cafe.

The interior of the store is based on wood and is inspired by the romantic atmosphere of the Taisho era. It has a retro and calm atmosphere, but the soft natural light streaming in from the garden makes it bright and open.

The walls are decorated with several paintings by Nakahara Mio, an artist from Fukuoka Prefecture, making the space feel like a small gallery.

You can relax and enjoy sweets and art.

Collaboration with a popular Western confectionery shop! Japanese-Western fusion sweets filled with the essence of Dazaifu

Cafe Kasanoya offers a variety of unique Umegae Mochi arrangement sweets from Kasa no Ie, such as Kasane Mochi (500 yen), which is Umegae Mochi sandwiched with plenty of bean paste, and Golden Mochi (500 yen), a kinako mochi made with Umegae Mochi.

Our top recommendations are "Koume" (700 yen a la carte, 1,200 yen with a drink) and "Hakuume" (700 yen a la carte, 1,200 yen with a drink).

This is a collaborative product that combines Umegae Mochi, the pride of Kasa no Ie, with the special chocolate of Chocolate Shop, a popular Western confectionery shop in Fukuoka City.

This time I ordered "Koume" (hot coffee set 1,200 yen).

"Beni Ume" is a umegae mochi cake drenched in warm bitter chocolate, topped with whipped cream, flakes from the chocolate shop "Hakata Rocher," almonds, and pistachios.

The crispy, fragrant exterior of the umegae mochi, with its plump bean paste filling inside, is topped with smooth, rich bitter chocolate. It may seem like an unexpected combination, but it's a wonderful harmony of Japanese and Western flavors.

Once you take a bite, you'll be amazed at how well they go together!

It was a perfect treat for the Reiwa era, blending Japanese and Western styles, new and nostalgic.

"Shiraume" uses milk chocolate, so it is recommended for those who like sweet things.

The coffee in the set has a deep flavor with little acidity. It is carefully brewed one cup at a time using a ceramic filter that prevents impurities from coming through, and it pairs perfectly with the sweets.

The plum-shaped plates and cutlery rests decorated with plum-shaped mizuhiki cord are also cute and typical of Dazaifu.

The friendly and courteous service of the staff is also an attraction, and it's a comfortable place where you'll find yourself staying for a long time.

Enjoy choosing souvenirs at "Tenoi-ya"

Along with the cafe, don't forget to check out "Tegoi-ya."
