A place worth visiting! Enjoy seasonal Japanese cuisine in the secluded sanctuary of Karatsu, surrounded by nature (Saga)

Hello! I'm Fukuoka Nyakki, a writer who enjoys discovering new food in and around Fukuoka city.

This time, we will introduce a river fish restaurant located in Shichiyama, Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture.

Sasabune, a Michelin-listed restaurant nestled like a hideaway on the riverbank, serves seasonal river fish and seafood (Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture)

The Shichiyama region, a mountainous area known as the inner sanctum of Karatsu, is a small village in a valley surrounded by nature, with clear air, clean water, and high-quality hot springs known as beauty baths.

It is located about an hour's drive from Fukuoka city and a 10-minute drive from Hamasaki Station on the JR Chikuhi Line.

Sasabune, a restaurant serving seasonal river fish dishes, is located on the banks of the Tamashima River, which flows through the center of Nanayama.

The young head chef cooks and serves seasonal river fish, such as carp, trout, sweetfish, and eel, along with vegetables and wild plants from the Seven Mountains, with the discerning eye, skill, and passion of his chef. This restaurant is a place where you can spend a relaxing time both physically and mentally, enjoying the freshness that cannot be replicated in the city and the unique dishes that allow you to savor the essence of the ingredients.

We also pay particular attention to the tableware, and the food is served on Karatsu ware and Arita ware carefully selected by the chef.

Apparently, there are many repeat customers from far away who are enchanted by the food and hospitality.

The restaurant has been awarded a Michelin Plate in the Michelin Guide Fukuoka, Saga, Nagasaki 2019 Special Edition.

The restaurant has a sophisticated Japanese atmosphere with tables and a counter seating for 30 people, allowing you to enjoy your meal at your own pace.

"Yamame Fish Dishes" allows you to rediscover the deliciousness of river fish dishes

This time we had the beautiful and vibrant "Yamame (Japanese mountain fish) all-you-can-eat" (6,000 yen + service charge / reservation required).
*Yamame trout can be eaten all year round, but they are best eaten during the two seasons, from March to June and from September to November. From July to August, sweetfish are in season, so we recommend eating them during that time (reservations required).

The contents are from when I visited in May, but I will introduce each dish one by one.

Yamame trout sashimi. Freshly filleted Yamame trout sashimi is delicious. You can choose between sashimi or strained.

This is a yamame trout with its backbone. The crunchy texture when eaten with the bones is addictive.

Yamame fish bone crackers (garnished with broad beans, koshiabura, and wisteria flowers). They had a light and crispy texture.

Considering the generous portion size, deliciousness of the food, and the atmosphere of the restaurant, the price seemed like a bargain.

The service is also polite, making it a perfect place for important meals.

Enjoy seasonal river fish such as sweetfish, carp, and eel! Meat dishes such as Saga beef and duck are also available.

Other menu items include "All-you-can-eat carp" (4,400 yen), "One carp dish" (7,000 yen), "Grilled eel set meal" (3,900 yen), and "Roast Saga beef set meal" (3,900 yen). They can also accommodate any budget or desired dish.

"We want to serve dishes using the best ingredients and prepared to perfection, so we appreciate it if you could make a reservation by phone," says the head chef. Please take a little trip out on your day off and come and enjoy some delicious river fish dishes.

After your meal, you might want to add a day trip to the hot spring facility with a highly alkaline simple hot spring (pH 10.1) located a five minute drive from Sasafune.

Thank you for the meal. (Text by Fukuoka Nyakki)
