A delicious lunch just 3 minutes from Hakata Station! A hidden cafe with a clay pot rice and small bowl plate (reservations required) (Fukuoka City)

Hello♪ I'm chippachapus and I love going to cafes and trying different gourmet restaurants.

This time, we will introduce you to a hidden old-style Japanese cafe located in a back alley, just a 3-minute drive from Hakata Station or a 3-minute walk from Gion Station on the Subway Airport Line!

A hideaway quietly tucked away in an alley! Handmade old-style house cafe "CHA CHU CHO" (Hakata Station, Hakata Ward, Fukuoka City)

"CHA CHU CHO" opened in front of Hakata Station in Hakata Ward, Fukuoka City in November 2024.

There is a sign a little way in from Ohori-dori street on the Hakata exit side of Hakata Station, and from there you can find it down a back alley.

The shop is a 70-year-old traditional Japanese house that has been hand-renovated to give it an even more traditional feel than the original.

A lot of wood was used, so the space had a cozy woody smell.

There are five seats at the counter and two tables that seat four people.

They open for lunch from 12pm until 2pm, for cafe service from 1.30pm until 4pm, and for dinner from 5pm.

This time we will be introducing the extremely popular "Clay Pot Lunch Plate" and cafe menu.

"Lunch Plate" where you can enjoy freshly cooked rice cooked in a clay pot and carefully selected homemade dishes

The "Clay Pot Lunch Plate" (1,500 yen) is so popular that we recommend making a reservation in advance.

This set includes freshly steamed clay pot rice, miso soup with lots of ingredients, a selection of three rice accompaniments, and a selection of three side dishes.

The owner, who trained at a high-end kaiseki restaurant, carefully selects the ingredients for the dishes, and even the sauces and dressings are all handmade.

They mainly use seasonal ingredients, and the side dishes and accompaniments to the rice change depending on the day.

On this day, from the back left, the dishes on offer were roast Itoshima pork, soft-boiled egg, and grilled Japanese Spanish mackerel with saikyo miso, and from the front left, new potatoes and hijiki seaweed pickled in plum vinegar, Kinzanji miso and seaweed butter, and yellowtail with sesame soy sauce.

This is "Roasted Itoshima Pork." It was cooked slowly at low temperature for two hours, and was moist and tender.

It was paired with homemade tomato koji, which went perfectly with the flavor of the pork.

This is "Spanish Mackerel Saikyo-yaki" topped with plenty of homemade green onion flavored sauce. The Spanish mackerel has a strong savory flavor from the burnt miso, and the slightly spicy green onion flavored sauce adds an accent.

The rice used is apparently from Itoshima.

Each person is provided with their own clay pot, and the rice is cooked to order, so it's always freshly cooked, which is nice.

When you put it in your mouth, you can feel the graininess, but it has a fluffy and soft texture. It's so delicious that you'll want to eat it with just rice. If you can't finish it, they will make it into a salted rice ball so you can take it home.

First, try it as is. Then, after enjoying it with side dishes, we also recommend eating it with "onsen egg" and soy sauce on rice with raw egg on top.

The dashi soy sauce is also homemade, apparently made by simmering bonito flakes for hours. The rich flavor of the dashi stock goes well with the onsen egg.

Another recommended way to eat it is to put the "Nori Butter" on hot rice.

Eat it with a soft-boiled egg.

The savory flavor of the seaweed and the rich sweetness of the butter blended nicely with the rice, making it so delicious that you'll get addicted to it.

Apparently, the miso soup they use in the winter is made with barley miso from Yanagawa.

The ingredients include deep fried eggplant, mushrooms, green laver, and Nankanage.

In particular, the aroma of the fried eggplant and the juicy texture it gave off the moment you took a bite were irresistible.

We also recommend a relaxing cafe time with homemade sweets and coffee.

Next, we will introduce the cafe menu. You can order it as a sweet after lunch. Takeout is also available!

The photo shows the "Today's Cake + Drink Set" (900 yen, 700 yen if you order lunch) and the "Three Little Sweets + Drink Set" (800 yen, 600 yen if you order lunch). Today's cakes were "Lemon Cake" and "Cookie Brownie".

The "Lemon Cake" uses plenty of lemon in the batter, giving it a direct sweet and sour lemon taste, which is well balanced with the sweet icing on top.

It had a crumbly texture and was delicious.

The "Cookie Brownie" is served with homemade raspberry sauce and whipped cream.

It has a rich chocolate flavor and is quite filling! The crunchy texture of the cookies and pistachios on top also add a nice accent.

The "Three Little Sweet Desserts" consists of "Cream cheese tofu with honey (only when honeycomb is available)", "Caramelized walnuts", and "Matcha and hazelnut cookies".

The "Cream Cheese Tofu" was delicious, with the light taste of tofu pairing perfectly with the sweetness of honey.

The recommended "coffee" to go with the sweets is a slightly bitter "Hisayama Coffee" brewed strong using an espresso machine.

Both the lunch and sweets were made with great care and were really delicious, leaving me very satisfied!
