Always full! Once you eat, you'll be hooked ♡ Kansai-style okonomiyaki and monjayaki restaurant that boasts delicious broth (Kitakyushu)
Hello. I'm Honosuke, and I love eating flour-based foods and rice together.
This time, we will introduce a must-see restaurant for okonomiyaki and monjayaki lovers. It will be open for regular business hours (opening at 11:30) from January 2nd.
Enjoy the authentic taste in Kitakyushu! "Tekojima 2" is an exquisite okonomiyaki and monjayaki restaurant filled with the owner's particular tastes (Shimosone, Kokuraminami-ku, Kitakyushu City)
Tekojiman 2 is a popular local okonomiyaki and monjayaki specialty restaurant located about a 6-minute walk from JR Shimozone Station.
There is also free parking, so it is convenient to go by car.
After training in Osaka, the home of okonomiyaki, and Tokyo, the home of monjayaki, the owner opened "Tekojiman" in his hometown of Shimozone in 2015. The restaurant's deliciousness has earned it a reputation, including being selected in Tabelog's "Top 100 Okonomiyaki Restaurants" for two years in 2022 and 2023. Taking over the same taste, he opened his second store, "Tekojiman 2," in the same Shimozone area in December 2023.
*"Tekojiman" will change its business model to an izakaya and reopen as "Teppan Sakaba Hitojiman" in September 2024.
The restaurant has seven 4-seater hotplate tables and six counter seats. The tables are separated by partitions, which makes dining more relaxing and enjoyable!
Kids chairs available! Children can enjoy themselves without worry.
Signature dish! Try the Kansai-style okonomiyaki
First, let us introduce two of the owner's "attention to detail" in creating delicious Kansai-style okonomiyaki!
Tip 1: The stock is made by slowly simmering chicken bones for six hours.
Their proud dashi, which is prepared almost every day, is full of flavor and uses chicken bones as well as bonito, kelp, and shiitake mushrooms! It is cooked for a total of about 6 hours. They use it not only for okonomiyaki and monjayaki, but also for a variety of other dishes.
Tip 2: Cut the cabbage by hand! The cutting method changes depending on the place of origin and the season.
The okonomiyaki in "Tekojimaan 2" has a lot of cabbage. There's more cabbage than batter! I was surprised when I heard that they cut that much cabbage by hand every day.
You can really feel the love they have for their okonomiyaki and their customers. This "attention to detail" is the secret to its deliciousness!
For both okonomiyaki and monjayaki, the staff will prepare all the dishes for you, so even if you're not confident in your cooking skills, you don't have to worry. Cooking it yourself is fun, but it's safer to leave it to the professionals.
This is the most popular okonomiyaki, "Jiman Special (regular size)" (1,408 yen).
This hearty dish is topped with plenty of green onions and a fried egg, and is filled with pork, squid, tentacles, shrimp, octopus, and scallops.
It was delicious, crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside.
Next is the "Beef Tendon with Green Onion and Egg (regular)" (1,298 yen). *The photo shows the dish without green onions.
The tenderly simmered Wagyu beef tendon and egg are a perfect match with the fluffy dough filled with plenty of cabbage!
By the way, you can customize your okonomiyaki in various ways, such as without mayonnaise, without pickled ginger, or without vegetables in your yakisoba. It's nice to be able to enjoy it however you like♪
Be sure to enjoy the piping hot Monjayaki!
Don't miss the Monjayaki, which is cooked at each table ♡ No matter how many times you watch it, the excitement of watching it come to completion is irresistible!
This is the "Jiman Monja (regular size)" (1,408 yen) topped with an egg.
You can enjoy a variety of textures, including several types of seafood, corn, and Baby Star ramen.
I also felt this while eating the okonomiyaki, but the umami flavor of the dashi stock is strong and it's delicious even without sauce! There is extra sauce on the table, but you don't really need it.
Next is "Camembert Cheese Monja (regular size)" (1,480 yen).
A luxurious dish that uses a whole Camembert cheese. The thick Monjayaki dough and the creamy Camembert cheese are an exquisite match that will have you coming back for more!
Yakisoba with potato salad?! I was surprised! It goes so well together!
My recommended dish is the "Potato Salad Omelet Soba (regular)" (1,408 yen), which I tried once and became addicted to.
An innovative visual, featuring fried noodles wrapped in egg topped with potato salad.
The creamy, mild flavor of the potato salad adds a whole new dimension of deliciousness.
The final dish is always rice!
We'll introduce two popular rice dishes to finish off a meal.
"Sujiyakimeshi (regular)" (1,180 yen). *The photo shows the dish without green onions.
The flavor of the tender Japanese beef tendons permeates the rice, and the slightly crunchy texture of the cabbage adds an accent to the fried rice. You won't be able to stop bringing the spoon to your mouth, to the point where you'll wonder, "Huh? Am I hungry now?"
"Jiman no Sobameshi (regular)" (1,180 yen) is also recommended. *The photo shows the dish without green onions and pickled ginger.
It goes without saying that the combination of noodles and rice is delicious! If you add an egg yolk halfway through eating it, it becomes even more mellow and delicious.
Reasonably priced and enjoyable ◎ A wide variety of lunch menus
The lunch menu is also substantial. In addition to the "Okonomiyaki set meal" (from 1,298 yen), "Monjayaki set meal" (from 1,298 yen), and "Yakisoba set meal" (from 1,188 yen), which come with unlimited refills of "Salad + Miso Soup" or "Rice + Miso Soup", or "Salad + Rice + Miso Soup" (+100 yen),
There are also many teppanyaki dishes such as the "Teritama Chicken Set Meal" (regular 1,188 yen) and the "Tasty and spicy! Pork, kimchi and egg set meal" (regular 1,188 yen). It's hard to choose!
The photo below is my lunch one day. I ordered the popular teppanyaki "Wagyu stamina horumon set meal (regular)" (1,298 yen).
With the privilege of sitting at the counter, you can watch the food being prepared up close while you wait. The sounds and smells are delightful.
Yes, it's done! Teppanyaki menu items come with rice, miso soup, and salad, all of which can be refilled as much as you like.
The plump and juicy horumon meat is coated with homemade miso sauce, making it perfect for eating with rice.
The miso soup contains beaten eggs and tempura flakes, and is flavored with their famous chicken stock.
When I first visited the restaurant, I was impressed by the rarity and deliciousness of having tempura scraps in the miso soup...and ever since then, I've been adding tempura scraps to the miso soup at home too♡
Take-out is also available!
The rich flavor of the dashi stock makes it delicious even when cooled, so it's also recommended to enjoy it at home as takeout! My family often uses it too.
On this day, I ordered "Shrimp ball (regular)" (1,058 yen), "Suji omu soba (regular)" (1,274 yen), "Seafood butter rice (regular)" (1,058 yen), and "Scallop butter" (734 yen). *All without green onions
The illustrations on the container lids always warm my heart ♡ Apparently, they are hand-drawn one by one by staff members who are skilled at illustration.
This is the "Jiman Special (regular)" (1,382 yen). When ordered as a takeout, it is topped with a well-cooked egg. You can enjoy a different taste from the one you get in the restaurant.
In addition to the dishes introduced this time, there are many other attractive dishes such as the owner's recommended snacks "Fatty Tendon with Ponzu Sauce," "Tonpeiyaki," and "Negiyaki"!
I dream of conquering the entire menu someday.
Seats tend to fill up even on weekdays, so we recommend making a reservation for both lunch and dinner.
Everyone, please come and enjoy the authentic taste♪ (Text by Honosuke)
