Oyster huts have now become a specialty of Itoshima, Fukuoka.
In winter, about 30 oyster huts open in six areas of Itoshima City - Fukuyoshi, Gafuri, Funakoshi, Gishi, Fukae, and Nokita - and the huts become bustling with people. All of them are directly managed by fishermen, and the appeal is that you can eat as much fresh oysters and seafood as you want at reasonable prices.
There are currently seven stores open in the Funakoshi area. In front of each store there is a large parking lot that can accommodate about 100 cars, but it is almost always full on weekends and holidays! We recommend checking the store you want to visit in advance before heading out.
Things you should know if you're going to an oyster shack for the first time!
Although they are called "huts," these days they are all sturdy buildings with excellent cold weather protection, so you can enjoy your time here without having to worry about the weather or temperature.
At oyster huts, you pay a few hundred yen for each table as a charcoal fee and gas fee, which includes not only the cost of charcoal and gas, but also work gloves, an oyster knife, chopsticks, plates, and a jacket to protect you from dirt. Basically, you can come empty-handed.
There are also huts where you can bring in drinks and other items. However, the details of what you can bring in vary from hut to hut, such as "rice balls are allowed," "there is a time limit for seating if you bring alcohol," and "condiments are allowed," so be sure to check in advance. It is also good manners to take home any trash you bring in.
What are the key points to consider when choosing an oyster hut?
Each oyster hut has its own differences in terms of service and atmosphere, and the side menu is one of them. Some oyster huts offer a wide range of dishes such as oyster rice, fried shrimp, seafood bowls, and sweets, as well as grilled spiny lobster, abalone, sausages, and vegetables in addition to oysters.
While oysters are delicious as they are, the real fun is in changing the flavor with seasonings and toppings.
Some oyster huts offer special seasonings and toppings for an additional fee. If you would like to bring your own, be sure to check in advance.

This oyster hut is particular about charcoal grilling and keeps the nets and charcoal in the best condition before serving the oysters. The shop's recommended dishes include [Oyster Rice] and [Maruhachi Pudding].

Oyster hut Horyomaru
Oysters grown in the high-quality mountain water that flows into the sea of Itoshima are activated using Toyoryumaru's unique technology, the "microbubble manufacturing method." The oysters are characterized by their rich flavor and large size.
The sashimi menu, made by the chef himself, is the restaurant's recommendation.

Senryumaru
This charcoal-grilled oyster shack is one of the few in Funakoshi Fishing Port.
In addition to plump oysters grown from scratch, other recommended dishes at the restaurant include "Homemade dried foods," "Oyster rice" made with kelp, sake, soy sauce, and fresh oysters, and "Tai Chazuke" (sea bream chazuke) with sea bream soup (only available from November to December). Look for the green sign. The owner himself goes out fishing before dawn and serves mainly what he caught that day.
Reservations (by phone) can be made up to one week in advance. On weekends and holidays, priority is given to customers who come on the day, and reservations are only available between 10:00 and 11:00.
There is also a shuttle bus (for 10 people) available on weekdays only that will take you to the nearest station (only if you are not bringing any food or drink with you).

Kaki House Shoei
This oyster hut allows customers to self-order using their smartphones. In addition to jumpers, aprons are also available for free rental.
On weekdays, they offer free Shishamo fish and coffee, and children receive sweets as gifts. The handmade Ohagi rice balls, available only on weekends, are also a highlight.

Itoshima Oyster Hut Clothing Room
Run by generations of Itoshima fishermen, this pink oyster hut is a landmark. They are particular about hygiene, such as using ozone sterilization, and manage the live oysters.
On weekends and holidays in particular, there can be long lines of people waiting to enter the store (reservations cannot be made).
You are welcome to bring in your own drinks and oyster toppings (please make sure to take any trash home with you). If you bring in alcohol, there are time restrictions on seating.

Oyster House Mokkun
They serve oysters that are treated with microbubbles and sterilized with ultraviolet light, and are particular about hygiene. In addition to oysters, they boast a wide variety of menu items, including grilled dishes and sashimi made with fresh seafood caught that day.
