Sold out every day! "Limited to 50 meals per day" Popular lunch at Old-style Onigiri Cafe (Suemachi)
Hello♪ I'm chippachapus and I love going out to cafes and trying different gourmet food.
This time, we will introduce you to "Old House Onigiri Cafe", surrounded by nature and located about 40 minutes by car from the center of Fukuoka city!
It's like a world of Japanese folk tales!? An old-fashioned rice ball cafe in the middle of nature, "Omusubi Kororin" (Suemachi, Kasuya District)
Omusubi Kororin opened in Suemachi, Kasuya District in July 2024.
Located at the foot of Mt. Wakasugi, this old-style cafe is surrounded by nature and greenery. It has a very warm and cozy atmosphere, like something out of a Japanese folk tale.
The interior of the store makes use of the old house and has a warm wooden feel.
Depending on your seat, you can also see the large storehouse outside.
In addition to table seating, there are also tatami seating options that are convenient for families with small children.
Limited to 50 meals per day! A lunch set where you can enjoy luxurious "onigiri" made with carefully selected ingredients and plenty of toppings
The rice, salt, water, and seaweed used in the onigiri are all carefully selected by the owner.
The rice used is "Kasuya-grown Yumetsukushi," which is characterized by its luster and slight sweetness. Its taste has been endorsed by the local JA Kasuya.
This delicious rice is cooked with natural water pumped up daily from Mt. Wakasugi, resulting in fluffy and soft rice.
When making the sushi, they use salt rich in natural minerals, made using a unique method and techniques at "Salt Workshop Sen" in Suemachi, to give the sushi a soft, fluffy texture that crumbles easily when eaten.
The nori used to wrap the sushi is "Suma Nori" from the owner's hometown of Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, which is known for its strong flavor and delicious aroma.
There are currently 17 different onigiri fillings available. Takeout is available for purchase individually, but dine-in is only available as part of the lunch menu set.
There are two types of sets: "A Set" (1,650 yen) which includes two types of rice balls of your choice, pickles, a main dish, soup, two side dishes, and a salad, and "B Set" (1,100 yen) which includes two types of rice balls of your choice, pickles, one side dish, and soup. *Some rice balls you choose may incur an additional charge.
This time I chose the "A Set".
First, let's look at the wide variety of onigiri. All of them are packed with ingredients! You can add one to a set, so the listed price is the price for a single additional order.
This is "Ikura and Salmon" (400 yen).
The crunchy texture of the salmon roe and the soft flesh of the salmon were a perfect match.
From the left, these are "Miso meat" (250 yen) and "Mentaiko mayo" (350 yen).
"Nikumiso" brings out the sweetness of the meat and vegetables, making it delicious and perfect for eating with rice.
"Mentaiko Mayo" is a combination of Spicy Fish Eggs and mayonnaise, with just the right amount of spiciness.
From the left, these are "Shrimp Tempura" (400 yen) and "Shrimp Mayo" (400 yen).
The shrimp tempura was well infused with broth, and the firm texture of the shrimp and the crispy batter were excellent.
The "Shrimp Mayo" is shrimp tempura covered in plenty of mayonnaise, and is so delicious that you will become addicted to it.
From the left, these are "Negitoro" (400 yen) and "Spicy Fish Eggs" (250 yen).
The "Negitoro" was coated with plenty of soy sauce and green onions and was very delicious.
The spicy Spicy Fish Eggs went perfectly with rice.
From the left, "Salted Mackerel" (350 yen) and "Kombu" (250 yen).
The salted mackerel was very tender.
Next, the main dish.
The menu changes weekly and there are three options to choose from. I'll introduce you to the menu from the day I visited.
This is "Chicken Nanban." It is made with domestic chicken thighs and is very tender. The chunky ingredients go well with the tartar sauce.
This is "Fried Shrimp". It was deep fried and crispy, and the shrimp inside had a nice firm texture. This also goes great with tartar sauce!
Take-out only bento boxes are also available!
In addition to the individual rice balls available for takeout, there is also the takeout-only "Takekawa Bento" (950 yen).
It contains two simple rice balls and a small side dish.
You can also use it as a cafe! The homemade pudding made with Okinawan brown sugar is a must-try.
In fact, this shop can also be used as a cafe, and offers a menu of sweets and drinks.
There are three types of sweets available: "Kororin Pudding" (350 yen), "Brown Sugar Soy Flour Ice Cream" (400 yen), and "Seasonal Parfait" (market price). This time we chose the highly recommended "Kororin Pudding."
The pudding is made with Okinawan brown sugar and has a rich flavor and a creamy texture that was even more delicious than I expected.
The onigiri are so popular that they sell out early every day. Even after the onigiri are sold out, you can still use the cafe.
Come and enjoy a leisurely lunch and sweets while soothing yourself in the nature and atmosphere of the old house. (Text by chippachapus)
