A popular restaurant in Kurume that serves pork cutlet rice bowls, soft and delicious, and full of broth!

Hello. I'm Yuri and I love delicious udon.

This time, I'd like to introduce you to a udon restaurant in Kurume City that was unanimously praised by my family.

A must-see for udon lovers! A unique and one-of-a-kind udon restaurant, "Udon HIRO" (Kurume City)

Udon HIRO is located 8 minutes walk from Yasutake Station on the Nishitetsu Tenjin Omuta Line, along Prefectural Route 23.

The shop opened in 2018 and has a rustic, old-style Japanese-style exterior with a large sign as its landmark.

Even though we visited shortly after the store opened, it was already packed with customers, proving that it is a popular restaurant loved by locals.

There are table seats, counter seats and tatami seating available.

Another great thing about this place is that it has an easy atmosphere for groups and families with children.

A surprising combination, but delicious! "Superb Char Siu Udon" full of flavor

When it comes to udon toppings, common choices include burdock tempura, sweetly simmered beef, maruten, and wakame seaweed, but the most recommended topping at this restaurant is actually "char siu."

The signature dish is unique and outstanding: "Exquisite Char Siu Udon" (980 yen).

This dish won the gold medal in the soba and udon category at the 2023 Grand Cuisine, a gourmet selection of exquisite dishes chosen by owner chefs from all over the country (sponsored by airship).

The pork used in the char siu is "Yame Fukufuku Pork" that is raised on Yame tea and herbs, and is cooked at low temperature until tender.

They also use a homemade sauce that is specially formulated to go well with the udon, making this literally the finest char siu, different from what you'd find at a ramen restaurant.

It's large and fairly thick, but surprisingly soft.

It has a similar texture to roast pork.

The key point is to ensure that the flavor is thoroughly absorbed all the way through to the center. This is apparently the result of years of refinement.

The homemade udon noodles are made using domestic wheat and are slightly chewy but not too thick, making them extremely easy to swallow.

The broth is thick and has a strong salty taste.

I felt that the balance when combined with the pork was perfectly calculated.

The most popular dish is the moist and brothy "Gold Medal Katsudon"

This is another signature menu item!

The "Gold Award Katsudon" (930 yen) won the gold award in the donburi category at the 2021 Grand Cuisine event (sponsored by airship).

In fact, it is the most popular menu item at Udon HIRO. It comes with either soup or a mini salad, and I chose the soup this time.

A different type of pork is used in the dish than the "Yame Fukufuku Pork" used for the char siu, and you can sense the care that goes into using this different type of pork.

Instead of quickly combining freshly fried pork cutlet with egg, this type is simmered thoroughly over a long period of time, so that the pork cutlet is moist all over and the flavor of the broth permeates all the way through.

It's often said that the katsudon at udon restaurants is delicious, and that's absolutely true! The soft katsu was excellent.

Free refills of toppings are also a highlight

The toppings in the complimentary items corner are available in a wide variety and are free to refill.

Besides the standard "tenkasu," there is also "bonito flakes" and "stewed kelp" that go well with rice, "Udon DE Salad" which is similar to macaroni salad, and "crispy udon" which is like a udon version of hard yakisoba.

In particular, the crispy udon noodles are delicious as a snack on their own, or added to udon noodles to soak up the broth.

What's even better is that you can take it home for free!

There are many udon restaurants in Fukuoka, but this one stands out as unique.

My kids were also hooked on the deliciousness, and it became a favorite restaurant for the whole family ♡
