A rare pork bone soup! A popular tantanmen specialty shop (Kasuga City) with a choice of spiciness from 0 to 10
Hello. I'm Yuri and I love ramen and all kinds of noodles.
This time, we will introduce a restaurant specializing in dandan noodles in Kasuga City.
Casual atmosphere but authentic! Dandan noodle specialty store "Menya 59 (Goku)" (Kasuga City)
"Menya 59 (Goku)" is located a 4-minute walk from the west exit of Kasuga Station on the JR Kagoshima Main Line.
It is located across from Clover Plaza, a Fukuoka Prefectural complex.
"We want to create a new noodle culture in Hakata," says this restaurant, which takes pride in its dandan noodles made with tonkotsu soup.
In fact, the restaurant closed once in January 2023, but the current owner, who fell in love with the food, took over and reopened it in May of the same year.
There are only counter seats inside the store.
It was clean and had a welcoming atmosphere even for one person.
Choose your level of spiciness! Our proud Hakata Tonkotsu "Dry Dandan Noodles"
The specialty "Dan Dan Noodles" are available in "Dry" (900 yen) and "Soup" (900 yen). There are also other dishes such as "Soy Milk Dan Dan Noodles with No Soup" (950 yen) and the limited-time "Cold Dan Dan Noodles" (900 yen).
You can choose the spiciness of each menu item, from "no spicy" that even children can eat, to the basic "level spiciness," "level 2 spicy," "super spicy (level 6 spicy)" (+150 yen), and "Phoenix (level 10 spicy)" (+250 yen), so you can enjoy it according to your preference.
First, I ordered the most popular dish, the "Dry Dandan Noodles," at level 2 spiciness.
Besides the meat and miso, the ingredients also include mizuna, purple onion, crushed nuts, shredded green onions, and fried onions, making for a beautifully coloured dish!
The noodles are flat, made using whole wheat flour from the long-established noodle manufacturer, Aoki Shokusan.
By the way, the "soup-filled" version uses curly noodles.
The sauce is a combination of homemade sesame sauce and tonkotsu soup, and the rich flavor and aroma of the sesame combines with the whole wheat noodles to create an exquisite taste.
The homemade chili oil that goes with it has a good balance of spiciness and aroma, and the tongue-numbing punch of the Sichuan peppercorns is irresistible.
In addition, the meat miso is seasoned sweetly with sweet bean paste (tianmianjiang), which not only adds depth of flavor but also helps to neutralize the overall spiciness.
While the noodles are chewy, the ingredients are mostly crunchy and chewy, and when you mix them all together and eat it, the textures add up perfectly!
This is truly a masterpiece that shines with attention to detail.
After finishing the 180g of noodles, we recommend finishing off with some "Oimeshi" (50 yen) in the remaining sauce!
This time I had it simply with rice and the leftover sauce, but there were also toppings available such as cheese (300 yen) and raw egg (100 yen).
It was a fantastic drink that kept me entertained until the very end.
Must-try "non-spicy" version
I ordered "non-spicy" for the kids, so we tried different versions.
Dandan noodles are basically spicy, but personally I would wholeheartedly recommend the non-spicy version to anyone, even those who don't like spicy food!
The flavor is complete without relying on spiciness. I highly recommend you try the rich sesame flavor.
Be sure to check out the side dishes too
Something you should definitely try with the "Dantan noodles" is the "Rice with Raw Egg" (350 yen).
The dish uses eggs that won first place at the 1st Tamago Kake Gohan Festival (hosted by the Japan Tamago Kake Gohan Research Institute in 2019), in which over 3,000 carefully selected eggs from across the country competed, giving it a rich flavor.
The combination of the dashi soy sauce that goes with it is also impressive! The rich flavor and slight sweetness of the flying fish dashi is sure to make your cheeks water.
There was also a wide selection of craft beers from around the world. Enjoying a hearty bowl of "Dan Dan Noodles" with a beer in hand is sure to be a blissful experience.
Please stop by and check it out. (Text by Yuri-chan)
