This time, we will introduce some noteworthy udon restaurants in Munakata City.

"Menya NOW NOODLE" (Munakata City), a udon restaurant where you can choose between black and white dashi

Menya NOW NOODLE opened on July 29, 2024 in the complex commercial facility Create Munakata, about a 10-minute walk from JR Akamaga Station.

It has an eye-catching and stylish appearance.

There are 12 parking spaces next to the store, and a second parking lot behind it for 18 spaces.

As shown on the large banner in the exterior photo, a major feature of this restaurant is that you can choose from two types of dashi: "black dashi" and "white dashi."

Once you enter the store, you'll feel a stylish atmosphere, just like a cafe!

Tasting report of the featured menu

You can choose between "white dashi" or "black dashi" for the "Kake Udon" (550 yen), "Tsukimi Udon" (650 yen), "Wakame Udon" (650 yen), "Maru Ten Udon" (680 yen), "Gobo Ten Udon" (680 yen), "Ebi Ten Udon" (850 yen), and "Niku Niku Udon" (950 yen).

The "Black Dashi" is based on a stock made with plenty of dried sardines, blended with kelp, shiitake mushrooms, skipjack tuna, and dried round herring. It is topped with dark soy sauce from the local Munakata City company, Maruyoshi Soy Sauce. It is said to be a rich and delicious stock that they are proud of.

On the other hand, the "Shiro Dashi" is made with dried sardines, bonito, and kelp, with dried mackerel added, and is mixed with Maruyoshi Soy Sauce's light soy sauce and salt. It has a strong umami flavor and is amber in color.

The homemade udon noodles are made using only wheat flour, salt, and water, and are made after careful study of the ingredients and how they are aged. They take three days to prepare.

There are also toppings available such as "Half-boiled egg tempura" (130 yen) and "Meat and meat" (400 yen), so you can arrange it to your liking.

Kake Udon

First, try the basic "Kake Udon (Black)" (550 yen).

Judging from its color, you might think that the black dashi stock would have a strong flavor, but rather than being strong, it has a deep, rich flavor. It is fragrant and delicious.

The udon noodles are thin and have a smooth, elegant texture that goes down incredibly well.

I felt that it was a great deal to be able to enjoy this quality at this price!

Meat and meat udon + shrimp tempura topping

"Menya NOW NOODLE" is actually run by a famous yakiniku restaurant. Its specialty is the "Niku Niku Udon" which is full of meat and was created with the know-how of the former owner of a famous udon restaurant.

This is "Nikuniku Udon (Black)" (950 yen) topped with "Shrimp Tempura" (300 yen). The "Shrimp Tempura" comes on a separate plate, so you can add it whenever you like.

The meat used in the "Nikuniku Udon" is carefully selected domestic beef. It is simmered until it is tender and falls apart in your mouth.

It had no particular peculiar taste and was incredibly delicious.

Meat and meat udon noodles + burdock tempura topping

This is "Nikuniku Udon (White)" (950 yen) topped with "Burdock Tempura" (130 yen).

The "white dashi" has a light flavor with a fragrant dashi flavor that spreads softly in your mouth. It has a different impression from the "black dashi" "Niku-Niku Udon."

The crispy "Burdock Tempura" went perfectly with the udon!

Topped with grated daikon radish, soft-boiled egg tempura and onion tempura

The "Oroshi Bukkake (Hot/Cold)" (680 yen) is also noteworthy. It is topped with wakame seaweed, grated daikon radish, bonito flakes, green onions, and chopped nori seaweed.

This was topped with "Soft-boiled Egg Tempura" (130 yen) and "Onion Tempura" (130 yen).

The seasoning for the bukkake is apparently made with black dashi stock and additional bonito flakes.

The noodles have a distinct texture and are delicious. The toppings add richness to the refreshing udon.

In particular, the soft and creamy egg yolk of the "Half-boiled Egg Tempura" was a perfect match with the shiny noodles!

Cheese curry udon

The very popular "Cheese Curry Udon" (980 yen) is a bowl of noodles that was created through repeated trial and error. The curry is based on onions and meat, and has a hint of sweetness added as a secret ingredient, in consideration of its compatibility with the udon broth.

It has a soft and gentle taste at first, followed by a spicy kick.

The fried onions on top are mixed with cumin, coriander, garam masala, etc., giving it a fragrant, deep flavor.

The flavor of the curry and the flavor of the soup stock were perfectly matched, making it incredibly delicious.

Mini Tenmusu

A recommended set to order with udon is the "Mini Tenmusu" (120 yen each).

In addition to the "Mentaiko Tempura Musu" and "Shrimp Tempura Musu" shown in the photo, there are also "Scallop Tempura Musu" and "Squid Tempura Musu." You can choose your favorite flavor from four different flavors: salt, tempura sauce, mayonnaise, and chili sauce.
