The delicious firm pudding is a must-try! A cozy and popular retro café (Kego, Chuo-ku, Fukuoka)
Hello. I'm ayu.latte, a writer who loves cafes and coffee shops.
I came across a really great shop the other day, so I'd like to introduce it to you!
Opening in 2023! A small cafe with six counter seats, "Kissa Kaya" (Kego, Chuo-ku, Fukuoka City)
Located two blocks south of Keyaki-dori, along Kego Hondori Street, where a variety of restaurants are lined up, is Cafe Kaya. Opened in October 2023, it is a specialty coffee, alcohol, and toast shop.
I entered the shop feeling excited as the white noren curtain fluttered in the breeze.
There are only six counter seats inside the store.
If the restaurant is full, it is not okay to wait in front of the restaurant. You will be told to "please wait a little while longer" so please try again without waiting in line. If you are lucky, you will be able to get in without any problems.
When you sit down, you will be told, "There is water behind you, so please help yourself!" The retro glasses with floral and animal patterns are cute.
The owner has a slightly unusual background.
Originally a kindergarten teacher, she attended German classes in order to study in Germany, the birthplace of kindergartens, but gave up midway. She then decided to study English first, and went to Ireland to study the language, where she discovered the charms of cafes.
"It's something you don't really need, but it's amazing that so many different people gather for the coffee," he said, and before he knew it, opening a cafe became his goal.
After returning to Japan, he worked at Starbucks Coffee and then Adachi Coffee, also located in Kego, gaining a solid foundation of coffee knowledge and skills before opening his own business, where he continues to work to this day.
Because of this connection, the shop uses beans from Adachi Coffee.
By the way, the name of the store comes from the initials of the phrase "Come As You Are" that the owner found written on a piece of clothing he bought in Portland. He later learned that it was also the title of a Nirvana song, and it stuck with him as a nice phrase.
"I feel like a lot of people these days are trying too hard to make themselves look good," says the owner. He also wants people to come just as they are, without any pretense.
"Homemade hotcakes" with a nostalgic taste
In addition to a wide variety of toast dishes, the food menu includes "Homemade Pancakes" (880 yen apiece, 1,200 yen with a blended coffee set) and "Classic Pudding" (450 yen apiece, 800 yen with a blended coffee set).
They are committed to providing the natural flavor of unpretentious ingredients, and neither their "Homemade Pancakes" nor their "Classic Pudding" contain any flavoring oils or essences.
Our "Homemade Pancakes" are made with an original batter made primarily from whole wheat flour, strong flour, and roasted almond powder.
Just watching them being cooked one by one in an iron frying pan is exciting! It takes about 10 minutes to cook them after an order is placed.
Freshly baked, piping hot pancakes are served.
It comes with butter and maple syrup. This combination is the best!
It has a simple taste with a subtle sweetness that evokes a sense of nostalgia, and is very satisfying to eat.
You can also customize it to your liking with toppings such as fried egg, bacon, salad, strawberry jam, cheese, banana, whipped cream, and bean paste (120 yen each, 100 yen each for three or more).
The photo shows it topped with a fried egg and bacon.
It's so delicious when you mix it with the juicy yolk! It would also be great for lunch.
Tasty bittersweet caramel! Firm and chewy "Classic Pudding"
"Classic Pudding" (450 yen) is made with simple ingredients such as eggs, milk, cane sugar, and granulated sugar (caramel sauce). You can also have it without whipped cream (50 yen off).
It's a traditional firm pudding. It's very smooth, and the flavor of the eggs fills your mouth. It's so delicious it'll bring a smile to your face! I also really liked the bittersweet caramel sauce.
There is a "Blend Coffee Set" for food, which is more economical than ordering each item separately. If you order it as a set with a drink other than "Blend Coffee" (500 yen), such as the "Wiener Coffee" (600 yen) shown in the photo, you will get a 100 yen discount.
They also seem to focus on drinks other than coffee, so be sure to check out the ones made with their homemade lemon syrup.
By the way, if you order food alone, a seating charge of 200 yen will be charged, so we recommend ordering it as a set with a drink!
"Kissa Kaya" is a place where you can relax and unwind. Please come and visit. (Text by ayu.latte)
