This time, we will introduce shops where you can buy hearty bento boxes.

Freshly made, piping hot fried chicken and bento lunches are popular! "Karaage Umechan" (Arae, Sawara Ward, Fukuoka City)

Karaage Umechan is located about a 3-minute walk from the Arae intersection, near the Arae 2-chome intersection.

The shop's yellow sign and exterior are eye-catching.

They sell fried chicken, side dishes, and bento boxes made with homemade sauce, and it's such a popular shop that customers keep coming in one after the other.

All of the bentos and side dishes are made fresh after an order is placed and are absolutely delicious.

The "Fried Chicken Single Pack (3 pieces)" (300 to 420 yen) comes in seven flavors in total: the standard "Salt," "Soy Sauce," "Sweet and Sour," and "Nanban," as well as three limited-time flavors.

The most popular lunch box is the "Salted Fried Chicken Lunch Box" (590 yen). The meat is marinated in plum paste, so it has a plum scent.

There are also dozens of other dishes, including "Fried Chicken Curry" (800 yen), "Fried White Fish Bento" (630 yen), and "Pork Cutlet Bento" (630 yen)! A rich lineup.

There is also a great value "Daily Bento" (500 yen) available.

Not on the menu!? A hearty "Instagram-exclusive bento"

I found out that there was a hearty item on the menu that wasn't on the regular menu, so I decided to order that this time.

I often see posts about this on Instagram, and it's called the "Instagram Limited Bento." Anyone can order it by telling them that they saw it on Instagram.

There are three types: "Ver.1" (7 pieces of fried chicken), "Ver.2" (1 rolled omelet, 5 pieces of fried chicken), and "Ver.3" (2 fried shrimp, 5 pieces of fried chicken, and rolled omelet).I ordered the most popular "Instagram Limited Bento Ver.2" and the "Instagram Limited Bento Ver.3" which was added in May 2024.

Instagram limited bento Ver.2

"Instagram Limited Bento Ver.2" is a bento containing one rolled omelet and five pieces of fried chicken.

You can choose from four different flavors of fried chicken, and the price varies depending on the flavor: "Salt" (1,050 yen), "Soy sauce" (1,050 yen), "Sweet and sour" (1,130 yen), and "Nanban" (1,170 yen).

I ordered the popular "Nanban" bento box. I was surprised when the bento came out!

This bento box is topped with a huge rolled omelet, making it very impactful. It's so filling that the lid won't close.

The nanban with plenty of tartar sauce and the sweet rolled omelet both went perfectly with rice.

Instagram limited bento Ver.3

"Instagram Limited Bento Ver.3" is a bento topped with two fried shrimp, five pieces of fried chicken, and rolled omelet.

The price also changes depending on the flavor of the fried chicken: "Salt" (1,200 yen), "Soy sauce" (1,200 yen), "Sweet and sour" (1,280 yen), and "Nanban" (1,320 yen).

I went for the standard "salt" and changed the rice to "chicken rice" for an additional 130 yen.

The fried shrimp is crispy on the outside and has big, plump shrimp inside, making it very satisfying.

The plum-scented "Salted Fried Chicken" is brimming with juices.

"Torimeshi" had a sweet and nostalgic taste.

Karaage Umechan offers a variety of bentos, from daily bentos for just 500 yen to hearty bentos.
