A food court with shops supervised by top chefs! "Bakery is also great" worth the trip (Miyawaka City)

Hello. This is the Daily Bread Diary of a bread nerd living in Fukuoka who travels around Japan eating bread.

It's getting warmer, it's a fun time to go out!

This time we will introduce you to a special spot where you can enjoy bread, lunch, and sweets all in a full course meal! What's more, there are hot springs nearby, making it the perfect place for a drive or outing.

GROCERIA Wakita Branch (Miyawaka City) is a food court where you can enjoy bread, sweets, and dishes created by famous chefs.

GROCERIA Wakida store, which opened in 2022, is about 45 minutes by car from the center of Fukuoka city.

There is a large parking lot, so you don't have to worry even on crowded weekends.

Facing Trial GO Wakita Store, walk down the corridor on the right and you will see the entrance.

The bright and open interior of the store is a renovated elementary school gymnasium.

This spacious space houses three stores: bakery "Pont Pain," cafe "Yamatorte," and restaurant "Miyawaka Kitchen KOHAKU."

All three stores are supervised by renowned chefs, including the director of a popular Tokyo bakery and a French chef from a famous restaurant.

This food court operates under the concept of local production and consumption, with all stores using locally produced vegetables and fruits from Miyawaka and Kyushu.

This time, we will be focusing on the bakery "Pont Pain."

Pont Pain: A bakery full of originality

This is "Pont Pain."

Using wheat flour and rice flour from the local Miyawaka area, as well as carefully selected domestic wheat, this natural bakery makes bread with great care and effort, using as few preservatives and additives as possible.

Ayako Yamamoto, who trained in France and is now the bread director at 365 Nichi Junibun Bakery in Tokyo, is the head boulangerie and oversees the bakery.

Among the many breads on offer, the standout item is the specialty "White Mentaiko Butter French Bread" (350 yen per piece, pictured below, left), a must-have for Fukuoka residents.

This is a rich mentaiko butter French french bread made with original uncolored, additive-free Spicy Fish Eggs from "Kuradashi Mentaiko Honpo" in Saga Prefecture, homemade mayonnaise made with Miyawaka-produced "jiyo eggs," and Hokkaido-produced "Yotsuba butter."

Here are some sweet breads for snacks. The most popular item is the "Lemon Bread" (240 yen per piece), which is not a melon bread.

The fluffy brioche is topped with crispy cookie dough and filled with cream made with fresh, hand-squeezed lemon juice.

We also have sandwiches with lots of fillings!

The "Aged Roast Beef Sandwich" (460 yen each) is a hearty sandwich made with the extremely popular aged roast beef from the restaurant "Miyawaka Kitchen KOHAKU," which is located on the same floor.

The "Teriyaki Chicken Sandwich" (460 yen each) is made with homemade tartar sauce made from ground eggs.

The recommended bread is this! The crunchy and addictive "Croissant Crustine"

All of Pont Pain's breads are moist, highly hydrated, and contain just the right amount of air, giving them a texture that is sure to please everyone.

My recommendation is the "Croissant Crustine" (300 yen)!

It's a strange-shaped croissant. It's shaped so that there are layers all over, and you can tell just from looking at it that it took a lot of effort to make.

Looking at the cross section, there are few cavities.

Crunchy and crunchy! It has a hard texture. It's been a while since I've had such a hard dough. It's addictive, with a new crunchy texture that's different from the croissants we're used to!

The inside is moist and has a buttery aroma, but it's not heavy and not too sweet. I think it would be fun to put some ingredients in it.

It was a delicious taste that could only be found at Pont Pain and not at other stores!

By the way, all breads are available for take-out, but you can also eat in. There are also great value sets available during lunch time (11:00-15:00).

Cafe Yamatorte's recommended tarts made with fresh fruit!

Next is Yamatorte, the cafe next to Pont Pain.

Yamatorte is a sweets cafe overseen by Ayako Yamamoto, the same person who oversaw Pont Pain. They work with producers who are committed to organic farming and natural cultivation, mainly in Miyawaka and Kyushu, and create a variety of sweets, including tarts, using seasonal fruits.

The menu includes seasonal drinks and parfaits topped with plenty of fruit.

The refrigerated case is lined with colorful sweets.

The fruits used in the cakes change depending on the season, but the fruits are always fresh and very sweet, and the tarts have a delicate and sophisticated flavor, so I highly recommend them.

Although I didn't eat there this time, the restaurant "Miyawaka Kitchen KOHAKU" located in the same facility is also worth checking out. This restaurant is overseen by an experienced French chef and offers aged meat dishes, stone oven pizza made with Miyawaka rice flour, omelet rice made with Miyawaka rice and local eggs, original pasta, French cuisine, and more. As a bread lover, I always get takeout bread, but I'm also interested in this restaurant!

On the way back, enjoy the hot springs! Enjoy the Miyawaka drive to the fullest!

"Wakida Onsen" is about a 5-minute drive from "GROCERIA Wakita Branch." After filling up on lunch and dessert, it's nice to soothe your day's fatigue in a hot spring.

This is a recommended spot for the upcoming rainy season. Let's enjoy some delicious bread and an outing! (Text/Mainichi Pan Nikki)
