A hidden gem with a spectacular view! "Great for a drive" A new cafe attracts attention in Yame

Hello! I'm Hakata Aya, a writer who loves hot information about Fukuoka.

Just under an hour's drive from central Fukuoka, a new cafe with a spectacular view has opened in Yame, one of Fukuoka's most famous tea-producing areas!

A new store will open in March! The long-established tea shop "Ochamura" (Yame City)

"Ochamura" is located on a small hill in Murooka, Yame City, Fukuoka Prefecture.

The store was originally located across from the current location, but will open as a "new store" in March 2024. The original location is now a manufacturing facility.

This is a long-established store that has been in the tea business since 1940, and is celebrating its 84th year in business this year. It mainly sells products made from tea leaves grown in Yame's cool climate and clear water, which are then turned into tea by skilled tea masters.

A hidden gem! A cafe with a spectacular view of the tea fields right in front of you

Our destination this time is the "Stunning View Cafe" on the second floor.

Ochamura opens at 9:30, but the cafe opens at 11:00. Trying to contain my excitement, I head up to the second floor.

Once you go up the stairs, you'll find a warm, wooden space with elegant indirect lighting.

There is a "tea incense burner" so the aroma of tea fills the entire store. What a nice smell!

When you step out onto the terrace, you'll see a tea field right in front of you!

At this time of year, the scenery is covered in the green of new buds, which is a truly spectacular sight! The refreshing green color is a feast for the eyes.

If you sit at the counter facing the tea fields, you'll feel like you have the view all to yourself.

Enjoy exquisite sweets made with Yame matcha

At the "Zekkein Cafe" you can enjoy Yame tea sweets carefully selected by the Japanese tea appraisers that Ochamura is proud of.

The matcha used is Yame Matcha, which won two stars in 2023 at the Great Taste Awards, an international competition originating in the UK that selects teas based primarily on deliciousness.

This is the "Yame Matcha Parfait" (880 yen).

The menu includes plum-shaped monaka, Mont Blanc cream, shiratama, Amaou strawberries, specially selected bean paste, Yame matcha and thick matcha gelato, Yame matcha jelly, and more, allowing you to fully enjoy Yame matcha.

The strong aroma of matcha that fills your nose is irresistible! The perfect balance of sweetness and bitterness is the best!

"Yame Matcha Basque Cheesecake" (490 yen). The green background and the dark green Basque cheesecake make a wonderful sight...!

The surface is nicely browned and fragrant, the texture is smooth and melts in your mouth, and the bitterness of the matcha and the sweetness of the cheesecake make it absolutely delicious!

This "Yame Thick Matcha Terrine" (460 yen) is served with gelato.

You can directly feel the mellow aroma and richness of matcha, and it has a smooth and sticky texture. It has a luxurious taste that makes it seem like you are eating matcha as it is, and is a must-try for matcha lovers.

In addition to sweets, they also offer lunches that are only available for eat-in. The photo below shows the "Green Tea Soba and Soup Set" (980 yen), which is a bargain and includes "Green Tea Soba Salad" (780 yen) and "Today's Soup" (300 yen).

All the menu items are very reasonably priced! I was constantly surprised and asked myself if these prices were acceptable.

It is served with a homemade dressing made with Ochamura's "Umami Dashi".

The sour and savory dressing has a refreshing taste that brings out the deliciousness of the fresh, crunchy vegetables. You'll find yourself eating more and more vegetables.

The "Soup of the Day" set has a rich vegetable texture and is very satisfying. On this day, the soup was full of burdock, onion, and butter.

The recommended drink is the "Yame Matcha Latte" (Medium 560 yen, Large 635 yen). Rich Yame matcha is poured over milk.

The rich flavor of the matcha and the mellowness of the milk were a perfect match.

It was a wonderful time, savoring delicious sweets, lunch, and drinks while admiring the idyllic scenery.

Some items on the cafe menu are available for take-out. You can order at the counter on the first floor (the cafe is closed on Thursdays, but take-out is available on Thursdays as well).

Be sure to check out the tea and original products too

On the first floor, there is a wide selection of Yame tea produced in "Ochamura" and products that use Yame tea.

This is a wide variety of "Famous Tea".

Each has a different aroma and flavor, but they are clearly categorized so you can easily choose your favorite flavor.

The most popular by far is "Hatsumidori," a tea with a good balance of sweetness, richness, and a slight astringency.

This is "Ochamura no Ocha no Tsukudani" (680 yen), made by thoroughly stewing high-quality tea leaves from Yame. You can enjoy a different tea flavor than with seaweed tsukudani.

In addition to the "Umami Dashi" (2,680 yen), which is also used in the cafe menu, there is also "Ago Dashi" (2,680 yen). Incidentally, "Umami Dashi" is a product that won a gold medal at the 2009 Monde Selection. It uses plenty of seafood and mountain produce from Kyushu, including "Ago". Adding Gyokuro to it not only enriches the flavor, but also removes the fishy smell of the ingredients, resulting in a refined taste.

There are also plenty of other tea utensils on offer. There are also tea incense burners, which are rare to see in person, so please take your time to find your favorite!

At the Tea Village Scenic View Cafe, you can enjoy the spectacular views of the tea fields that change with the seasons. It was a great place to escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and spend some relaxing time. Why not give it a try? (Text by Hakata Aya.)
