The restaurant's appeal lies in its authentic flavors, such as the "Sri Lankan Curry" (1,000 yen) made with 18 different spices, and the three types of "Ajillo" (from 660 yen) that come in "Shrimp and Mushroom," "Gizzard Dash," and "Fluffy Egg."

Other dishes that are unique to Fukuoka include "Hakata Motsupon" and "Yaki Ramen." In winter, instead of tacos, hot dishes such as "Gratin" and "Oden" are available.

Recommended drinks to pair with this dish include Mexico's Corona beer, Chilean grape shochu Pisco, and homemade sangria.

[Tenjin Watanabe Street Food Stall] Tempura Stall Tenichi

It is no exaggeration to say that Tempura stand Tenichi has witnessed the changes that Tenjin has undergone since it was founded in 1962. The previous owner started the business at the age of 27 together with the female owner, and it was handed over to the younger brother of the previous owner, who continues to welcome many customers today.

The location is a 1-minute walk from Exit 11 of Tenjin Station on the Subway Kuko Line. It is in front of the Mitsubishi UFJ Bank Fukuoka Branch.

Tempura Tenichi

Image: Ticket Office

The most recommended dish at Tenichi is, without a doubt, the tempura. Apparently, in the past, there were many food stalls that served udon instead of ramen, and the store delivered tempura to nearby udon stalls.

The tempura, deep-fried crisply at high temperatures using four heat sources, comes in two sets: "Assorted Set A" (1,400 yen), which is an assortment of three shrimp, fish, and vegetables, and "Assorted Set B" (1,100 yen), which is an assortment of two shrimp and vegetables. The contents of each set change depending on what is in stock, so be sure to check them out when you visit.

In addition, the "Oden" (150 yen each) is prepared daily and is packed with ingredients such as the standard ingredients, tofu, potato, taro, hanpen (fish cake) added at the request of a customer who came to Fukuoka for work, and maruten (fried tempura), a dish typical of Fukuoka.

At the end of the day, you can stop by for a quick bite of tempura or a bowl of oden flavored with the gentle flavor of bonito stock, and take a moment to relax.

The warmth of Tenichi, a family-run business, attracts a wide range of customers, and in the early hours, families with children visit, as well as local regulars and tourists (check out the restaurant's Instagram). Enjoy a conversation with the proprietress, who says, "The secret to staying healthy is being able to talk to customers at close range."

[Tenjin Watanabe Street Food Stalls] Under one roof

"Hitotsu Yane no Shita" is a rare food stall where you can enjoy "udon," a dish that was once served at many food stalls in Fukuoka. It will start operating in July 2023.

The store is located in front of Fukuoka Mitsukoshi along Watanabedori, next to Nakanakanaka, which was mentioned on the previous page.

The nostalgic exterior of the stall was commissioned to an architectural designer who specializes in renovating old houses. The image they had in mind was of customers gathering under one roof, all enjoying a lively time together. This wish came true, and now the stall is visited by roughly half tourists and half locals, who come together to spend a fun evening.

In addition to being able to try dishes such as "Beef tendon stew udon" (900 yen), "Burdock tempura udon" (800 yen), and "Mentaiko kamatama udon" (900 yen), the specialty is the "Yakimentai jyu" (grilled mentaiko rice bowl) (small 1,200 yen, large 1,500 yen), which is a whole piece of Spicy Fish Eggs on top of the bento box.

They also have the "Yakimentai Tamagoju" (small 1,500 yen, large 1,800 yen), which comes with an additional omelet, as shown in the photo.

The restaurant is equipped with an authentic "pizza oven," and offers a variety of menu items that allow you to enjoy the plump and juicy finish that only an oven-baked dish can provide, such as "Oven-baked Offal" (1,300 yen) and "Oven-baked Duck" (850 yen).

Be sure to check out the familiar menu item "Mentaiko Ippon Kiln-Grilled," which has been kiln-grilled!

What's more, the proprietress Takano Hikari's mother has been running a food stall in Nakasu for over 40 years, and she has taken over the flavor of the oden, making it appealing that you can enjoy both the "nostalgic Fukuoka food stall" and the "neo food stall."

After returning home, Takano-san receives comments on Instagram such as "It was delicious," "It was fun," and "I'll come again," which makes her "more happy than anything, and the smiles of her customers make it worthwhile." She is working hard to increase the number of stalls run by women in the future. It's nostalgic and new, and even the first time you'll feel at ease. That's the kind of stall it is.

[Tenjin Watanabe Street Food Stall] Nakachan

Founded more than 30 years ago, "Hakata Specialty Tenjin Yatai Nakachan" has been loved by many regular customers and, more recently, by people from overseas.

It is a 1-minute walk from Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) Station on the Nishitetsu Tenjin Omuta Line, on the east side of Fukuoka Mitsukoshi along Watanabe-dori.

The head chef, Yoichi Nakagawa, and the rest of the staff are friendly, and the atmosphere is homey, making it easy for even first-timers to enter. It's no wonder that some customers say "I'm back!" as they enter the restaurant.

The restaurant offers a wide range of dishes, from "a drink you'll want to stop by after work" to "a must-try dish when you visit Fukuoka," with over 50 types of teppanyaki (grilled meat, eggs, vegetables, seafood, etc. on the grill), as well as yakitori, oden, ramen, and more.

Among the most popular dishes are the "Mentaiko Tamagoyaki" (1,000 yen), shown in the photo, which is a whole stalk of "Fukuya" Spicy Fish Eggs wrapped in a sweet egg, the "Yamaimo Teppan" (700 yen), and the "Yaki Ramen" (1,000 yen).

Also, be sure to check out "Hakata Piri Piri" (800 yen), which was developed with the idea of couples enjoying the food stalls together, where you wrap the ingredients yourself and eat them.

When tourists visit the stall, the chef is full of hospitality and will share recommended sightseeing spots and the history of food, so they are sure to have an unforgettable time. After running the stall for so long, regular customers sometimes get married and have children, and those children sometimes come back to drink, which the chef says makes him feel emotional.

He loves talking to customers so much that the staff tell him, "We don't need to talk, just cook the food," and he says, "I hope all of our customers feel close to Nakachan, so that they can call it 'their restaurant.'" He says that beer is the source of his energy, so please come and have a toast with the chef.

Head chef Akihiro Korehisa is originally from Oita Prefecture, and was inspired by Beppu's hell steaming cuisine, which led him to decide to serve steamed dishes at his food stall.

The signature dish is the "shumai," which is hand-made at a rate of over 140 per day. It is full of meat juice and has a punchy flavor. Other dishes include "Niku-niku shumai" (3 pieces for 450 yen), "Yuzu shumai" (3 pieces for 500 yen), and "Hakata mentaiko shiso shumai" (3 pieces for 550 yen).

Another popular dish is the "Fukuoka Meat Tamatebako Steamed" (1,500 yen), which includes Hanamidori chicken meatballs, Itoshima pork, and Raizan pork sausages. You can also enjoy it with five different types of salt, including yuzu salt, garlic salt, and matcha salt, to change the flavor.

In addition, there are about 20 kinds of steamed dishes, including steamed dishes in a bamboo steamer, chawanmushi, and even steamed rice for the final dish. You can also enjoy skewers of pork belly and chicken thighs, oden, and snacks.

Approximately 80% of the customers are women, likely due to the healthiness of the steamed dishes. They also have a wide selection of alcoholic drinks made with "beautiful vinegar" and non-alcoholic drinks.

Although it is a popular and busy restaurant with customers coming in one after the other, head chef Korehisa places great importance on customer service. "When I'm steaming food, I can talk to the customers while I'm steaming," says the head chef, who says that the best part of a food stall is being able to see the expressions on the customers' faces right in front of him. He welcomes many customers with his exclusive steamed dishes using Fukuoka specialties and ingredients, and the warm interaction that is unique to food stalls.

Thanks to the bright and friendly personality of chef Uehara Choichiro, who speaks Uchinaaguchi (an Okinawan dialect), the restaurant is always filled with the laughter of tourists and regulars.

Uehara decided to open a food stall in Fukuoka because of his friend's food stall "Naka-chan." After helping out for a year, he began to think, "I want to have my own castle by the time I'm 30." So in 1992, at the age of 29, he opened his own food stall.

The first thing that will overwhelm you is the sheer number of items on the menu. In addition to standard yatai dishes like yakitori, teppanyaki, oden, and ramen, there is also tempura, motsunabe, tacos, and a wide selection of a la carte dishes, noodles, and rice dishes. When you visit, be sure to try the specialty "Bite-sized Gyoza" (500 yen) shown in the photo, the "Jumbo Croquette" (250 yen) available only on Saturdays, and the chef's pride and joy "Tacos" (700 yen) which have been featured on TV.

"Food is a living thing. I have to do everything from cooking to serving customers by myself at a food stall, so it's hard work, but that's what makes it so fun," says the chef, whose driving force is "seeing the customers enjoying themselves." Because he runs the restaurant by himself, it's sometimes hard to talk to customers, but meeting all kinds of people is encouraging.

Recently, many foreign customers from Asia and Europe have been visiting, and you can enjoy a multinational atmosphere while still maintaining the traditional food stall atmosphere.

[Nagahama area food stalls] Nagahama Municipal Baseball Stadium

At Nagahama Municipal Baseball Stadium, the "baseball stall" has a menu that looks just like a sports newspaper, and when you make a toast they say "Play ball," and when you ask for the bill they say "Nice game!"

It is located in Nagahama Yatai Street, which opened in June 2023. It is about a 10-minute walk from Akasaka Station on the Subway Airport Line.

The head chef, Matsukiyo Takahiro, loves Fukuoka and has been visiting the city 3-4 times a year for the past 30 years. He has finally moved to Fukuoka and even started running a food stall. He is, of course, a huge baseball fan, especially a Hawks fan!

What catches your eye are the menus. There is a "Today's Starting Lineup" menu, which is a play on the team member list, and in the "Yakitori/Kushiyaki" column (220 yen each), you can see options such as "Straight (Thigh)," "Curve (Negima)," and "Shoot (Tonjiri)."

"Teppanyaki" (from 750 yen) with beef tongue, pork skirt steak, and miso offal,

In addition to "Oden" (180 yen each), other dishes include "Exquisite Tonpeiyaki" (650 yen) and "Thick Fried Tofu with Mentaiko Mayonnaise" (650 yen).

The recommended final dish is the "Nagahama Stamina Ramen" (850 yen), an original dish inspired by Tenri Ramen from Nara. The spicy chives will whet your appetite.

In addition to beer, sake, shochu, and sour drinks, the drinks list also includes "Craft Chu-Hi" flavors such as "Kyushu Lemon" and "Sakurajima Ko Mikan" (600 yen each).

The chef said he started the food stall because he wanted other people to love food stall culture as much as he does. Perhaps his feelings were conveyed, because once the professional baseball season begins, baseball fans come to Nagahama Municipal Baseball Stadium after watching a game and play another game. It seems that everyone is having a great time, regardless of whether they are on the opposing team or not.

[Nagahama area food stall] Tama-chan food stall

"Yatai Tama-chan" opened in "Nagahama-cho Yatai Street" in June 2023. It is a food stall run by "Tamaya," a popular yakiniku restaurant with several locations in Fukuoka.

Chef Torisu Daisuke says, "Yatai are an important tourist resource for Fukuoka." That's why, if he was going to run a yatai, he decided to pursue the best possible "taste," even when it came to ramen, and he continues to research and improve his ramen even now.

"Nagahama Pure Tonkotsu Ramen" (750 yen) is a masterpiece with a clean taste, made by simmering the pork leg bones (genkotsu), skull (tokotsu), and backbone (haikotsu) under pressure. Since many people do not order extra noodles at food stalls, the thickness of the noodles and the water content are carefully selected so that one bowl will satisfy you.

Another popular menu item is the "Yaki Ramen" (950 yen), which uses the same pork bone soup. The flavor of the time and effort put into making it is apparent to customers, and now some people come to the restaurant just for the ramen and then quickly finish it off.

Also, as it is a yakiniku restaurant, the variety of meat dishes is attractive. In addition to the standard "charcoal grilled chicken" (180 yen) and "pork belly" (200 yen), there are also other dishes such as "handmade meatballs" (250 yen) and the rare "raw lamb" (580 yen). There are also "three kinds of platters" (600 yen) and "five kinds of platters" (900 yen).

There are also other dishes on the menu that tourists can enjoy, such as the "Oden" (170 yen each) shown in the photo, which uses "ago dashi," a broth typical of Fukuoka, "Iwashi Mentaiko" (680 yen), and "Mentaiko Cheese Omelette" (880 yen).

Other dishes on offer include "Adult French Fries" (480 yen) and "Spicy Miso Teppan" (780 yen), and many local customers visit the restaurant as if it were an izakaya. Keep an eye on "Yatai no Tama-chan," which is constantly evolving.
