Great for a solo lunch! "Once you try it, you'll definitely want to come back" - Exquisite spice curry (Kurume City)
Hello. I am Yorimichi, the owner of the blog "Yorimichi's Fukuoka Introduction," which introduces delicious restaurants in Fukuoka.
These days, curry specialty restaurants are popping up all over the place, and just walking around makes you feel like you're in the mood for curry.
This time, we will introduce an authentic spice curry specialty restaurant in Kurume City.
Recommended for solo lunches! What's curry? (Kurume City), a restaurant serving spicy curry and natural wine
Our first destination is Sanbonmatsu Park in Hiyoshicho, Kurume City. It is about a 15-minute walk from JR Kurume Station.
As you walk along the tree-lined Sanbonmatsu street facing the park towards Honmachi,
You should see a large sneaker painted on the wall.
That's the place we're heading to this time: What's curry?, a spicy curry and natural wine restaurant that opened in July 2023.
The exterior looks like this, a curry restaurant? But it also looks like a stylish cafe.
As soon as I opened the door, the aroma of curry wafted out.
Have a look at this.
Spices are lined up on the counter. As an amateur, I don't really know what each one is, but I do know that they are curry spices.
There are counter seats and table seats, making it an easy place to drop in even by yourself.
Apparently there are a lot of office workers there during lunch time.
Try the curry that's packed with attention to detail!
The curry menu changes daily and varies depending on the time. On this day's menu, there was "Sri Lankan pork steak curry" (1,300 yen), "Beef and pork with lotus root keema curry" (1,000 yen), and a combination of the two, "Sri Lankan pork steak and lotus root keema" (1,500 yen).
The topping available was "Butter-sautéed spinach and shimeji mushrooms" (200 yen).
This time, I ordered the "Sri Lankan pork steak and lotus root keema" topped with "butter sauteed spinach and shimeji mushrooms" and with the spiciness at "normal".
My honest impression after taking the first bite of the so-called "roux" part of this typical Sri Lankan soup curry was "Hmm?"
If you ask me if it has rich flavor...hmm?
With that in mind, I took the second bite and was shocked when my taste buds finally caught up.
Oh, this is a new taste for him.
It was a little different from my common idea of curry and I couldn't keep up, but it was incredibly flavorful!
The more you eat it, the more your tongue will become accustomed to it, and you will begin to taste the spicy kick and other characteristics that make it a Sri Lankan curry.
The additional topping of "butter sauteed spinach and shimeji mushrooms" was also excellent, bringing together the slightly spicy taste in my mouth just right.
This is the carrot rapée that comes with the dish. It has a mild sour taste and is very easy to eat.
The onions, which are also served with the dish, are slightly sweet.
This is likely to become an indispensable palate cleanser.
And pork steak.
They use domestically produced pork, but rather than using a fixed brand, they choose the tastiest meat for each season.
Even though it's cooked thoroughly, it's not tough, which is probably because it's been carefully prepared.
Next, the "lotus root keema" part.
I liked the soup, which was full of Sri Lankan curry characteristics, but the seasoning was so good that I wanted to shout out, "This is it! This is it!"
The flavor is concentrated deep within the meat, and the aroma of slightly roasted spices blows through like a refreshing breeze.
For me, lotus root keema curry is the winner.
By the way, it is also OK to have it served on a separate plate.
It also caters perfectly to those who don't want to mix it with rice.
"What's curry?" has become a recommended restaurant that I personally want to visit again. I recommend everyone to go too. (Text by Yorimitsu)
