I was impressed by the deliciousness of the fluffy Kanto-style eel! "It's also reasonably priced" - A secret restaurant (Nishi-ku, Fukuoka)

Hello. I'm ayu.latte, a writer who loves delicious food.

I found a restaurant where I can enjoy delicious eel at a reasonable price!

A "Kanto-style" eel restaurant known only to those in the know: "Unagi Wakita" (Kamiyamamon, Nishi-ku, Fukuoka City)

This time we would like to introduce "Unagi Wakita", which opened in December 2022.

It is located in a corner of a residential area near the Shironohara housing complex in Nishi-ku, Fukuoka city.

It is about a 13-minute walk from Shimoyamato Station on the JR Chikuhi Line. There is a parking lot in front of the store, so it is convenient to come by car.

The eel served here is steamed and grilled "Kanto style." This may be a rare sight in Fukuoka, where "Kansai style" eel is grilled over an open flame.

The owner opened the restaurant out of a desire to convey to the people of Fukuoka the excitement and shock he felt when he first tried Kanto-style ramen, and to spread the deliciousness and possibilities of Kanto-style ramen.

The fish is steamed first and then grilled, making it fluffy and tender. By grilling the surface, it has a crispy, fragrant exterior and a fluffy texture inside.

Apparently they also pay particular attention to the balance between steaming and baking.

The sauce is "Kanto-style" and light, but it is designed to be light and easy to eat, while retaining a little sweetness, so that it can be enjoyed by those who are not familiar with "Kanto-style" food.

The rich flavor is added by slowly simmering the eel's head and bones that have been grilled at high temperature.

The restaurant has counter seats and three table seats.

It gets crowded on weekends, so it's best to make a reservation to ensure a smoother experience.

By the way, the restaurant was named "Wakita" with the hope of becoming a store that can "spread joy and bonds."

"Unadon" can be enjoyed in 4 stages

"Unadon" is divided into four levels based on the amount of eel.

Wakita Menu

This is the "Exquisite" (3,900 yen) which uses a whole and a half eel. The rice is completely covered in eel, so you can't see it at all! The moment you open the lid, the sight of it will make you cheer.

Next comes the "Special" (2,900 yen) which uses a whole eel, the "Jo" (2,300 yen) which uses three-quarters of an eel as shown in the photo below, and the "Regular" (1,700 yen) which uses half an eel.

I'm happy with how affordable it is, to the point where I wonder, "Is this really a reasonable price?"

Both are also available for take-out.

Another specialty: Hitsumabushi

On this day, I ordered another signature dish, "Hitsumabushi" (2,200 yen).

A generous amount of eel is served on top of the rice.

Divide the rice into 4 portions with a rice scoop...

For the first cup, pour it into a bowl and enjoy it as is.

For the second bowl, add the condiments provided (green onions, seaweed, and wasabi).

For the third bowl, pour the shop's special dashi stock over it, making it like ochazuke.

And for the fourth bowl, it is recommended to finish with your favorite of the three ways.

The eel meat is fluffy! The sauce is light but sweet, and just so delicious! There was a generous amount of eel, so I was very satisfied! It was delicious with the condiments and wasabi on top, and even with the broth poured over it.

You can enjoy the restaurant's flavor at home with the "Takeout Hitsumabushi" (2,400 yen).

New products coming in October

Two new products will be launched from October 2023!

First, there is the rare menu item "Unagi Maki" (1,200 yen), which is limited to 10 servings per day. The fluffy and tender eel goes perfectly with the soft and fluffy rolled egg. It's recommended as a snack to go with your drinks.

The other is "Juumabushi" (1,900 yen), a dish of unaju topped with green onions, sesame seeds, and seaweed.

It's so delicious you could eat as much as you want ♡ Highly recommended for those who like to eat hitsumabushi as is!
