Beyond the level of convenience stores! "Hojicha" and "Matcha" sweets available at [7-Eleven]

I'm Masayo Sakamoto, a writer who loves convenience store sweets.

Did you know that autumn is the best season for tea?

Tea leaves exposed to plenty of summer sunlight take on a bitter, rich flavor and contain more catechins and caffeine than new tea from spring.

Sweets that feature tea are now appearing one after another at 7-Eleven.

So this time, we will introduce you to the latest roasted green tea and matcha sweets supervised by a long-established tea shop!

1: You'll be addicted to the moist and smooth texture! "Hojicha Castella and Whipped Cream Supervised by Ito Kyuemon"

Sweets supervised by "Ito Kyuemon" become a hot topic every time they are released. It's nice to be able to enjoy authentic sweets supervised by a long-established tea shop in Uji, Kyoto, which has been in business for over 190 years, without having to go to Kyoto.

Starting Saturday, September 30, 2023, "Hojicha Castella & Whipped Cream Supervised by Ito Kyuemon" (270 yen) will be on sale.

As the name suggests, this castella cake is made with Ito Kyuemon's roasted green tea and is filled with roasted green tea whipped cream. It is topped with powdered sugar, giving it an elegant and simple appearance.

The castella dough is moist and melts smoothly in your mouth.

The sweetness is followed by a slight bitterness, and the fragrant flavor of roasted green tea fills your mouth.

The whipped cream has a strong roasted green tea flavor and is delicious. The light and smooth cream goes perfectly with the batter, creating an elegant taste.

Lastly, we have "Tsujiri Strong Matcha Chocolate & Crunch" (194 yen).

This ice cream is made using matcha from Tsujiri, a long-established store in Uji, Kyoto, that has been in business for over 160 years.

The product name "Okoi" apparently means "ice cream inspired by the taste of thick tea (Okoi)."

Upon opening the bag, you'll find a thick layer of matcha ice cream coated with chunky, crunchy matcha chocolate.

The matcha ice cream inside has a mellow and sweet taste.

The combination of the two flavors, the outside and the inside, creates a subtle bitterness and sweetness at the same time, and the delicious aroma of matcha spreads throughout your mouth.
