New for Fall 2023! Three Chestnut Sweets Available at MUJI
My name is Masayo Sakamoto, a writer who loves MUJI.
We're starting to feel autumn approaching... Sweets using autumn flavors have started to appear in various stores. MUJI released eight sweets using chestnuts on Wednesday, August 30, 2023!
This time, we will introduce three carefully selected recommendations.
1: The perfect combination of cookies and cream! "Chestnut Cream Sandwich Cookies"
First up is the Chestnut Cream Sandwich Cookie (150 yen), which is the perfect size for a light snack. Each piece is 155 kcal.
This is a fragrant cookie that makes use of the flavor of condensed milk, and the cookie dough has a soft, sweet aroma of condensed milk.
The dough, which contains almond powder, is crispy and crumbly when you eat it.
The cream made with chestnut paste sandwiched between cookies is
It had a nostalgic cream sandwich taste.
When the batter and cream come together in your mouth, you can taste the soft flavor of chestnuts behind the aroma and gentle sweetness of condensed milk.
2: Chestnut chunks add an accent! "Mochi-filled Chestnut Torayaki"
This is "Kuri Torayaki with Mochi" (4 pieces for 450 yen). Each piece is 163 kcal. I like that it is individually wrapped!
"Tora-yaki" is a type of dorayaki baked with a tiger pattern on the outside. Even at a specialty confectionery store, it is said that it takes the skill of a craftsman to create this pattern.
The castella dough is rich and sweet, so it's delicious even if you just eat it on its own!
From the side, it looks like a typical Torayaki, but...
When you break it open, you'll find a yellow rice cake in the middle.
The mochi has a sweet taste similar to chestnut paste and is very satisfying to eat!
There are chestnut pieces scattered throughout the bean paste, adding an accent to the flavor and texture.
It's a very sweet Japanese sweet overall, and we recommend eating it with coffee or tea.
3: Crispy and simple! "Chestnut Croissant"
Lastly, there is the leaf-shaped bite-sized "Chestnut Croissant" (290 yen). Each bag contains 392 kcal.
Some people may think, "Isn't this a pie?" However, a pie is made without yeast fermentation, while a croissant is made with yeast fermentation.
Therefore, in the case of pies, you can directly taste the flavor of the dough ingredients themselves, while in the case of croissants, the dough is leavened, allowing you to enjoy a richer flavor.
The Chestnut Bite-sized Croissant may look like a simple treat at first glance, but one bite and you'll find that the layered dough has a crispy texture and the rich flavor of butter spreads throughout your mouth.
Additionally, chestnut paste is kneaded into the dough, allowing you to enjoy the soft chestnut flavor and aroma, making this a refined, slightly sweet dessert.
It looks so cute, so it would make a great snack to have with tea.
MUJI also sells marshmallows, manju, roll cakes and other chestnut-based treats. Get a feel for autumn with these chestnut sweets that can only be enjoyed now. (Text by Masayo Sakamoto)
