Get ahead of autumn! [Ministop] Three new "Sweet Potato Soft Serve Ice Creams"
I'm Masayo Sakamoto, a writer who loves convenience store sweets.
Recently, autumn-themed sweets have started to appear at convenience stores.
Ministop, a popular store for cold sweets, released three soft-serve ice cream desserts made with sweet potatoes on Friday, August 25, 2023.
What's amazing is that each one is designated by a specific variety of sweet potato, such as "Beni Haruka" or "Mitsuimo"!
I tried it right away, so I'd like to introduce it to you.
1: Elegant sweetness! "Yakiimo Soft Serve"
Let's start with the "Yakiimo Soft Serve" (313 yen).
The sweet potato used is "Beni Haruka," which is said to be a popular variety.
I thought it might be a milk-based soft serve ice cream, but when I actually tried it, it had a strong roasted sweet potato flavor.
It has a taste and texture similar to that of a baked sweet potato that has been strained, and a refined sweetness. It's as if you are eating a baked sweet potato with a high sugar content.
Besides the cone, you can also choose a cup.
By the way, currently, all soft serve ice cream products at Ministop, with the exception of a few, come with an edible spoon for eating the ice cream.
It was sturdier than it looked, and it held up well until the very end, so I was able to enjoy both the soft serve and the spoon. The crunchy buttery flavor adds a nice accent to the taste, making this an excellent spoon that will leave you very satisfied.
2: The ultimate Beni Haruka treat! "Premium Beni Haruka Soft Serve"
This is "Premium Beni Haruka Soft Serve" (421 yen).
Both the soft serve ice cream and the toppings are made with "Beni Haruka" strawberries from Kagoshima Prefecture.
As its name suggests, this is a luxurious dish that consists of elegantly sweet Beni Haruka soft serve ice cream, topped with Mont Blanc cream and sweet potato chips.
When you take a bite, the topping makes you feel like you're eating cake!
The crunchy sweet potato chips, which resemble tortoiseshell candy, add an accent to the smooth Mont Blanc cream and soft serve ice cream, allowing you to enjoy the different textures.
You can choose the cup for the "Premium Beni Haruka Soft Serve," but we definitely recommend the waffle cone shown in the photo! The moderately sweet and satisfying batter goes perfectly with the rich Beni Haruka soft serve ice cream. We think it's also perfect as a break between cold soft serve ice creams.
3: Hot and cold dessert! "Taiwanese sweet potato soft serve"
Lastly, there is the "hot and cold" dessert "Taiwan Sweet Potato Soft Serve" (410 yen), which you'll want to eat as soon as you buy it. This dessert, which was released last fall and was very popular, is back again this year.
When it was handed to me for eating in, I was surprised to see steam rising from the cup. The soft serve ice cream gradually melted and mixed with the sweet potato.
The sweet potatoes used are carefully selected "Taiwanese honey potatoes" with a sugar content of over 25%. They are more like steamed or puffed potatoes than baked sweet potatoes. They are full of honey and have a refined sweetness.
Although it has the skin on, it is soft and delicious to eat.
The sweet potato is paired with Ministop's signature "Vanilla Soft Serve Ice Cream." Of course, it's a perfect match!
The sweetness of the honeyed sweet potato is mixed with the refreshing soft serve ice cream, giving it a rich flavor but a light aftertaste.
It's a simple dessert consisting of only honey sweet potato and soft serve ice cream, but you can enjoy the taste of each ingredient by eating them separately, and when combined it's more than twice as delicious!
The difference in temperature as they mix in your mouth is irresistible.
This new soft serve ice cream dessert lets you fully enjoy the taste of sweet potato. Be sure to try it at your nearest Ministop and get a taste of autumn in advance. (Text by Masayo Sakamoto)
