Once you go, you'll definitely come back! A great way to treat yourself to a lunch! A very popular French restaurant that's full every day with locals (Honjo, Yahata Ward, Kitakyushu City)
My name is Aoki Ura and I moved to Kitakyushu City due to my family's job transfer.
This time, we will introduce a restaurant in Honjo, Yahata-ku, Kitakyushu City, which is frequented by locals for its "delicious French cuisine that can be enjoyed in a casual atmosphere."
A diverse lunch menu is very popular! Reservations are required for French Bistro La Barbe (Honjo, Yahata City)
Bistro La Barbe has been a long-time favorite with locals since it opened in 1999. It is located on National Route 199 heading from Honjo to Wakamatsu, just before Honjo Athletics Stadium.
The cream-colored walls and blue door are the landmarks. The entrance to the shop is beautifully lined with seasonal flowers, creating a soothing space.
The interior of the store has a casual atmosphere, and there is a wine cellar that wine lovers will be fascinated by.
During lunch time, the restaurant is almost always full with locals. I myself have visited the restaurant twice before without a reservation, but was turned away because it was full, so I made a reservation and was finally able to enter this time. It is a popular restaurant that requires reservations.
The reason for its popularity is the diverse lunch menu.
You can choose from two types of French lunch, pasta lunch, and two types of curry.
"Bar Brunch A" (1,900 yen, 2,300 yen with dessert) is a set of appetizer, soup, bread, fish or meat dish, and coffee. There is also a "Bar Brunch B" (3,000 yen) which adds chef's choice pasta and dessert to this set.
The "Pasta Lunch" (1,900 yen, 2,300 yen with dessert) is also popular, and includes today's pasta, appetizer, soup, garlic toast, and coffee. Two types of pasta are available, and you can choose whichever you like. On this day, it was "Squid and Komatsuna with Tomato Sauce" and "Okra and Bacon with Cream Sauce." You can get a large portion for an additional 200 yen.
Other dishes available include "Wagyu Beef Curry" with an appetizer and coffee (1,650 yen, 2,100 yen with dessert), and "Seafood Curry" (1,750 yen, 2,200 yen with dessert).
This is the taste of the restaurant! A course lunch that is very satisfying
On this day, I ordered "Bar Branch A" and my husband ordered "Bar Branch B".
About five minutes later, the appetizer was brought out, consisting of homemade ham, quiche, and raw vegetable salad.
The quiche was warm and fluffy. The ham was lean and just the right amount of salty, and went perfectly with the mustard sauce.
The soup on this day was "chilled pumpkin potage."
A creamy potage soup. The sweetness of the pumpkin enhances the deliciousness even more. I couldn't stop eating it.
The French bread is served with cultured butter.
My husband ordered the "Chef's Choice Pasta" from the "Barbrunch B". On this day, it was "Scallops and Zucchini in Tomato Sauce".
The addition of cream to the tomato sauce makes it richer, bringing out the flavor of the scallops.
My husband exclaimed, "It's so delicious!" (laughs) After the meal, he said, "I'm really glad I ordered Barbrunchi B," so it seems the taste was so memorable.
The fish dish chosen for "Barbrunch A" was "Spanish mackerel meunière with basil sauce."
The sawara is crispy on the outside and fluffy and soft on the inside. The cream sauce is delicious and satisfying.
The vegetables on the plate were colorful and beautiful, and each vegetable was cooked differently to match the cream sauce, which was a real professional touch.
The meat dish chosen for "Barbrunch B" was "Sautéed Pork Fillet with Mushroom Sauce."
The portion was just right for my husband, who was only about 80% full after eating appetizers and pasta.
In my house, pork tenderloin is usually deep-fried and eaten as "tonkatsu." As a French dish, eating it at a sauté is a bit of a new experience.
When eaten with mushrooms tossed in butter and soy sauce, the flavor of the fillet spreads throughout your mouth, making it delicious!
I was surprised that even though it was lean meat, it still had a juicy texture.
All the desserts are delicious! Must-try desserts
The desserts at Bistro La Barbe are also excellent! I recommend choosing the lunch option that includes dessert.
The first dessert we chose from the five options on the menu was the Crepe Suzette.
The crepes are topped with cold vanilla ice cream, blueberries, and warm orange sauce.
The rich crepe and ice cream were complemented by the sweet and sour taste of orange, creating a very refreshing finish.
The other one I chose was the "Black Sesame Pudding", which was so full of black sesame that I couldn't help but exclaim, "This has so much sesame!" (lol).
The pudding is topped with a custard-flavored anglaise sauce and brown sugar syrup, giving it a rich flavor that is just as fragrant as the sesame.
The accompanying "ginger gelato" had a strong spiciness that was so strong it was like eating whole ginger, and it was incredibly delicious.
After the meal, you can enjoy coffee (hot/iced) in lovely tea utensils.
If you don't like coffee, you can order "tea (hot/iced)".
The tea is Earl Grey. The tea utensils are also very cute.
It was a very satisfying lunch.
This is a restaurant you should definitely visit when you feel like having a leisurely meal.
My husband and I are planning to come back soon and try other dishes next time! (laughs) Please make a reservation and go. (Text by Ura Aoki)
