How to freeze and store onigiri rice balls to keep them tasty!

First, let's look at how to freeze onigiri to keep them delicious.

Tip 1: Wrap freshly cooked rice in plastic wrap

By wrapping freshly cooked rice in plastic wrap, you can maintain the optimum moisture level and aroma of freshly cooked rice!

Rice that has been kept warm in a rice cooker or stored in the refrigerator will lose its flavor due to drying and starch aging. Wrapping freshly cooked rice is the key.

Tip 2: Once cooled, place in a ziplock freezer bag and freeze

Once cooled, place in a ziplock freezer bag, remove as much air as possible, zip it up and freeze.

By wrapping it in plastic wrap and placing it in a freezer bag, you can keep the moisture, flavor, and aroma from escaping!

Point 3: Make it into an evenly-spaced "zabuton" shape

We recommend making the onigiri into a thin, evenly-spaced square shape, roughly about 7cm square and 2cm thick.

Not only does it heat evenly when defrosting, but it also fits compactly in the freezer.

From here on, we will introduce 10 "Frozen Rice Ball Recipes" supervised by Marie Wakana, a time-saving cooking researcher and cooking influencer (with 590,000 social media followers!), and Takeshi Nishikawa, also known as the "Frozen Prince," who has sold over 190,000 copies of his books and is active in a wide range of media outlets!

All of them are easy to make. Just mix all the ingredients together, wrap the rice tightly in plastic wrap from all sides, being careful not to crush the rice, and once it has cooled down, place it in a ziplock freezer bag, remove as much air as possible, and freeze.

When ready to eat, remove the plastic wrap, place the frozen rice balls on a heat-resistant plate, loosely cover the plate with plastic wrap and heat (heating times are indicated in each recipe). After heating, leave the rice balls as is for 1-2 minutes to eliminate uneven temperatures and to make them warm enough to hold in your hand. If you like, you can wrap them in seaweed or other materials before eating.
