Travel back to the Showa era! Sweets and drinks served in cute retro glasses at this old-style cafe in Okagaki Town

Hello♪ I'm chippachapus and I love going to cafes.

This time, we will introduce you to an old-style Japanese-style cafe in Okagaki Town, Onga District!

A Showa retro space that will make you feel nostalgic! A traditional Japanese cafe worth going out of your way to visit: "Yamaguchi Shoten" (Okagaki-machi, Onga-gun)

Yamaguchi Shoten is located about 50 minutes from Fukuoka city, in a tranquil area surrounded by mountains and the sea.

It is about a 5-minute drive (or 16-minute walk) from Ebitsu Station on the JR Kagoshima Main Line.

The building is a 100-year-old traditional Japanese house. It is scheduled to open in April 2022, but there is a nostalgic atmosphere from the entrance.

The interior of the store was built by hand in order to make the most of the traditional structure and veranda.

There are lots of miscellaneous items and antiques on display that will remind you of your childhood or your grandmother's house.

There were lots of dried flowers hanging on the ceiling of the veranda.

No matter where you sit, you'll find a cozy space where you can relax.

The stylish plate style served in a basket ♡ "Lunch Gozen" where you can enjoy 8 dishes made with koji and sweet sake all at once

The first dish we would like to introduce is the "Lunch Gozen" (1,400 yen).

Eight small side dishes, rice, and miso soup are served in a basket (or wooden tray).

They mainly use ingredients grown in their home garden, and the food is flavoured with koji (malt) and amazake (sweet sake) with almost no seasonings.

The contents of the small dishes change depending on the day, but on this day they included "bean sprout and bean sprout salad," "fried chicken with salt koji (enzyme sauce)," "rolled omelet," "lotus root kinpira," "enoki and maitake mushrooms stir-fried with soy sauce and koji," "hiyayakko," "harusame salad," and "pickled konjac."

Each dish brought out the best flavor of the ingredients and went well with rice.

The Shio Koji Karaage was crispy on the outside and soft and light on the inside. The ginger flavor of the enzyme sauce added a nice accent and made it very delicious.

"Pudding" and "Cream Soda" served in cute Showa-era retro glasses

You can have lunch here, and also use the cafe.

The cafe menu has several types of sweets and drinks.

This time, I ordered the "Old-fashioned Retro Pudding" (450 yen) and the "Cream Soda of Those Days" (500 yen).

Both are served in Aderia Glass, a cute, retro design.

It matches the atmosphere of the shop and is very cute.

The pudding is a traditional firm pudding arranged in Yamaguchi Shoten style. It is served with cream and seasonal jelly (blueberry in this case).

It was very smooth and creamy, almost like a cheesecake pudding.

The sweet and sour blueberry jelly went perfectly with it and was very delicious.

"Ano Hi no Cream Soda" comes in three flavors: Blue Hawaii, Melon, and Strawberry. The photos below show the Blue Hawaii (left) and Melon (right).

As the name suggests, this is the cream soda that used to be sold on the rooftops of department stores! It's also good mixed with ice cream.

The lunch, sweets, and drinks tasted even better when enjoyed in a cozy space that made you want to linger for a while.

Once you've been there, you'll definitely want to go back.
