A specialty store for the Korean street food staple "Hotteok" has opened in Tenjin! A satisfying, chewy dessert (Chuo Ward, Fukuoka City)
Hello. I'm Aya, a writer who loves the hot topics of Fukuoka.
There are many opportunities to feel close to Korea, such as its gourmet food and artists. It is no exaggeration to say that it has taken root as something familiar, rather than being a trend.
This time, we will introduce you to a store that specializes in hotteok, a popular dessert sold at Korean street stalls!
The original illustrations are cute! "Moguko" (Tenjin, Chuo-ku, Fukuoka City) is a hotteok specialty store that serves easy-to-eat hotteok with a Japanese twist.
Moguko, a hotteok specialty store, opened on March 30, 2023 in Tenjin 3-chome, Chuo-ku, Fukuoka City.
Exit the ticket gates at Tenjin subway station, head north through the Tenjin Underground Mall, proceed towards Futata the Flag Tenjin, and it is about a 2-minute walk from the West 1 exit.
"Hotteok" is characterized by its chewy texture. "Hotdog" is also a famous Korean gourmet food, but this is something different.
At this restaurant, you can enjoy "Japanese hotteok," made to suit Japanese tastes and made using wheat from Fukuoka Prefecture and glutinous rice flour from Kumamoto Prefecture.
Moguko's concept is to "make the city of Fukuoka fun and happy."
The owner, Mr. Kaida, was impressed by the deliciousness of the hotteok he tried during a visit to South Korea and the sight of people walking around eating it with such joyful expressions on their faces that he decided to open a hotteok specialty store with the hope that more people will walk around the streets of Fukuoka with such joyfulness.
The bright, pink-themed interior of the shop is filled with cute illustrations! Take-out is the main focus, but if there are any empty chairs inside the shop, you can eat in there too.
Apparently, this illustration was drawn by the owner's father. It was so cute that I ended up taking lots of photos.
The handwritten menu is warm and lovely. In addition to hotteok, they also have several varieties of bingsu (Korean shaved ice) and amazake smoothies.
A variety of dishes from sweets to meals! "Moguko" menu
There are various types of hotteok, from sweets to savory dishes. There are about 10 types in total. They are cooked after you order, and you can watch them being cooked over the counter.
Freshly made hotteok is too hot to hold, so be careful not to get burned. The packaging also has illustrations on it, making it perfect for posting on social media.
Try the owner's recommended "Japanese Hotteok"!
This time, I tried the owner's recommended "Apple Hotteok" (500 yen) and "Tsukudani Hotteok" (500 yen).
This is a sweet menu item, "Apple Hotteok" (500 yen).
It is filled with sweetly simmered apples from Nagano Prefecture, and can be enjoyed like an apple pie. It is more chewy than a manju but not as stretchy as mochi, and the texture is just right and addictive.
Although they are large and filling, they are so delicious you can eat as many as you want!
This is the meal menu item "Tsukudani Hotteok" (500 yen).
The shop uses Kanazawa-made tsukudani, which the owner discovered after trying many different kinds of fish. It has a rich flavor with ingredients such as silverfish and river shrimp, and goes perfectly with the chewy dough.
The owner and staff are very cheerful and have a homely atmosphere. Not only is the hotteok delicious, but it's also a wonderful restaurant that makes you feel cheerful, happy, and happy.
They are currently planning over 100 different menu items, and would like to offer daily specials in the future. I'm looking forward to it! (Text by Aya.)
