~You'll love Fukuoka even more~
We send out information from Fukuoka every day that will make you say,"Yeah, that's right!"

Hello, I'm ayu.latte, a writer who loves cafes and general stores where you can spend some relaxing time.

This time we will introduce you to a very small shop that is filled with wonderful items.

Also noteworthy is the café space in the back: "Maison HAKOSHIMA" (Gokusho-cho, Hakata-ku, Fukuoka City)

Maison HAKOSHIMA is located along Gokusho Street in Gokusho-cho, Hakata Ward, Fukuoka City.

At first glance, you might not know what kind of shop it is...

Actually, it's a cotton textile and coffee shop.

"Maison HAKOSHIMA" was originally a manufacturer of a textile called "Hakozaki Stripes." In order to make "Hakozaki Stripes" a brand that would take flight around the world, the company chose the name "Maison," which is the French word for a company or store in the fashion industry.

"Hakozaki Stripes" is a cotton fabric made in Hakozaki Village (then) during the Meiji Period. It was used as everyday clothing for miners and ordinary people, and was also used for the happi coats worn by the "Old Higashimachi-ryu/Gokusho-cho" teams in the Hakata Gion Yamakasa Festival, but the industry itself disappeared during the war.

A few years ago, it was restored using the few remaining fragments.

Recently, there has been talk of having the happi coats (currently made from Kurume Kasuri) worn by the local community in Gofukusho-cho made from Hakozaki Stripes, and it seems that the tradition is slowly returning to the local area.

They also produce clothes and accessories that suit modern lifestyles, and sometimes collaborate with other genres to create new products and projects.

When I visited, the exhibition "Playing with Bread and Fabric" was being held. *The exhibition has now ended.

"SHIMA" is a special sweet that can only be eaten here

Here you can find special sweets that you can't find anywhere else.

This is "SHIMA," a Baumkuchen-like pastry that is baked by carefully stacking and flipping each piece of dough over 20 times.

It is supervised by Fukuoka-based confectionery and cooking researcher Yuriko Yamamoto.

It is said that the name "SHIMA" comes from this cross section.

The one you can enjoy now is the winter-only "Kimagure SHIMA Salt Chocolate ver." (600 yen). It will be available until Valentine's Day (although depending on the ingredients, it may end early, so if you're interested, be sure to hurry).

Also, the "Box Pudding" (600 yen) is available only on Fridays and Saturdays. It is an unusual pudding with a base of "SHIMA", rich egg liquid, and well-burned caramel inside a rectangular shape.

It has a firm texture, but is not too sweet. The fresh cream is served separately, so you can enjoy it whenever you like.

Drinks include various types of coffee (550-600 yen), chai (600 yen), roasted green tea (550 yen), as well as natural wine (600 yen).
