[Fukutsu-Munakata Day Trip Drive] Introducing Must-See Sightseeing Spots and Recommended Gourmet Food

I'm Yoko, a travel writer with 29 years of experience, and I've picked out some spots that you should definitely visit!

This time we will be introducing the Fukutsu and Munakata area, a 40-50 minute drive from Fukuoka city. Beautiful seaside, delicious gourmet food, cafes you'll want to stop by, and scenic spots await you!

Highly recommended for a change of pace on the weekend.

Take-out delicious sandwiches at "CHLOE & BREAD"

The first place you should visit is "CHLOE & BREAD," located in Fukutsu City along National Route 495. This take-out sandwich shop is produced by the neighboring restaurant "Tonari no Grill," and operates on the concept of "local production and consumption in Fukutsu."

The sandwiches are full of fillings and are very filling. The bread is freshly made from a popular bakery in Fukutsu and is lightly toasted after ordering. This gives it a crispy outside and fluffy inside. The fillings include black pork cutlet, Fukutsu red sea bream, eggs, whipped chocolate, and other hearty savory and sweet options.

Our summer recommendation is the "Grated Daikon Katsu Sandwich" (pictured below, 658 yen for a single item, 356 yen for a fries set, 324 yen for a drink set, 540 yen for a fries and drink set). The juicy black pork cutlet topped with plenty of shiso leaves and grated daikon radish is the perfect refreshing treat for the hot summer! Be sure to give it a try.

Lunchtime while feeling the sea breeze at "Fukuma Beach"

After getting a takeaway sandwich from Chloe and Pan, head to Fukuma Beach, a popular spot in Fukutsu City. A location with a sense of openness, overlooking the blue sea and wide sky. Although it is bustling with surfers and people enjoying walks, time flows at a leisurely pace.

Sitting on the embankment, listening to the sound of the waves in the background and feeling the sea breeze as you munch on the sandwiches is a whole different kind of delicious!

Rice flour bagels are the talk of the town! Kotoko, a shrine cafe in Munakata City

Kotoko is a rice flour bagel and koji cafe located quietly within the grounds of Marishi Shrine in Munakata City. It opened on March 3, 2025.

The interior of the shop, which was renovated from a former shrine office, is a warm and cozy space enveloped in the warmth of wood. It's a relaxing cafe that makes you feel like you're visiting someone's home.

In fact, Kotoko is a sister store of Mamemai, a specialty store for rice flour bread and rice flour sweets in Miyawaka City.

There are over 60 varieties of rice flour bagels in stock at all times, including the "Rice Flour Bagel Additive-Free Amazake Plain" (378 yen). All of them contain amazake, giving them a slightly sweet and chewy texture.

They also have sweets such as rice flour cakes made with seasonal fruits. Bagels, sweets, and gluten-free options are also very satisfying. You can enjoy them either as takeout or eat in.

For lunch, dishes using pesticide-free rice koji are available, such as "Rice flour bagel and local vegetables steamed in a bamboo steamer - koji bagna cauda sauce" (1,320 yen) and "One soup and three side dishes lunch" (1,485 yen). They also make their own salt koji, soy sauce koji, curry koji, and other ingredients, and use different koji for each dish.

Check out the extremely popular "Munakata Roadside Station" for great prices on fresh fish and local specialties

Needless to say, Munakata Roadside Station is the top-selling roadside station in Kyushu. People line up before the store even opens on weekdays to buy seafood delivered from four fishing ports.

The fresh fish section takes up about one-third of the store, and fresh fish just landed in the Genkai Sea is available at local prices that are incredibly cheap!

In addition to the fresh fish, the souvenirs made with local Munakata products are also worth checking out. There are also original products made in collaboration between companies and Munakata Roadside Station, so it's definitely worth a look.

We especially recommend the long-selling "Natural Seaweed Leaf and Nori Tsukudani (Shiso Flavor)" (110g, 400 yen). Characterized by its rich ocean aroma and soft texture, just putting it on freshly cooked rice makes it a feast!

And the most popular dessert is "Ichipuri (Hakata Amaou pudding)" (450 yen). The puree made from Hakata Amaou strawberries from Munakata and the melt-in-your-mouth pudding go perfectly together! Makes a great souvenir.

Great for photos! Take a special photo at Fukutsu's "Mirror Sea"

The last stop was to take photos of the "Mirror Sea" that can be seen from Tsuyazaki Beach, Fukuma Beach, and Miyajihama. At low tide on a windless day, the sky is reflected in the shallow waters, creating a fantastical mirror-like landscape! Due to its beauty, it is also known as "Fukutsu's Uyuni Salt Flats."

We especially recommend visiting at dusk. The pink and orange sky is reflected on the water, making you feel like you're in another world!
