[2025 Fukuoka Prefecture New Year's Shrine Visit Guide] Enjoy the first sunrise of the year at Shigaumi Shrine, the shrine of departure

At the beginning of the year, people visit shrines and temples to give thanks for the past year and pray for safety and happiness in the new year.

We will introduce you to some shrines in Fukuoka Prefecture that you should visit for your first visit of the year.

Shikaumi Shrine (Shika Island, Higashi Ward, Fukuoka City) is worshipped as the "guardian deity of the sea," "god of purification," and "god of rebirth and return."

Shikaumi Shrine enshrines the Watatsumi Sanshin, who appeared as a result of the purification ritual performed by Izanagi no Mikoto.

Known as the "head shrine of the sea god" and the "city of dragons" where the dragons that serve the sea god gather, this shrine has been devoutly revered as the guardian deity of Hakata Bay, a key location for maritime transportation facing the Genkai Sea.

The "Watatsumi Sanjin" are the gods of the sea who protect the bottom, the middle and the surface of the sea. In addition to protecting the safety of maritime traffic and bringing the blessings of the sea, they are also believed to have the power to purify impurities and disasters as gods of purification.

Furthermore, since he rules over water and tides and is said to control the life and death of people through the ebb and flow of the tides, he is also worshipped as a god of rebirth and return who controls the fortunes of people's lives and livelihoods. He is said to bring good fortune for all sorts of embarks and starts in life.

As he is the god of purification and exorcism, you should purify yourself by shaking the "Michioi" (left, right, left) over your body before praying.

To the right of the worship hall is a "remote worship site" from which you can look out over the majestic Genkai Sea and Hakata Bay, and from which you can worship Ise Shrine (directly ahead), Otake Shrine, and Otake Shrine (diagonally to the right) far beyond the torii gate.
