[2025 Fukuoka Prefecture New Year's Shrine Visit Guide] Homangu Kamado Shrine, the god of matchmaking, protection from evil and evil spirits

At the beginning of the year, people visit shrines and temples to give thanks for the past year and pray for safety and happiness in the new year.

We will introduce you to some shrines in Fukuoka Prefecture that you should visit for your first visit of the year.

A power spot for matchmaking: Homangu Kamado Shrine (Dazaifu City)

Homangu Kamado Shrine has a long history of over 1,350 years since its founding.

Since the main deity enshrined here is Tamayorihime-no-Mikoto, she is worshipped as the "goddess of matchmaking," who attracts and brings together souls (tama) and souls (yori).

Additionally, in the past, the shrine was used to ward off evil spirits from the Dazaifu government office, and people praying for the safety of their voyages to the continent and for success in their business came to pray here. As a result, the shrine is also deeply revered as a god of protection from evil and misfortune. Many people visit the shrine to pray for good relationships with loved ones, as well as good connections with family, friends, work, and nature, as well as those starting a new life and those reaching a turning point in their lives.

Other notable spots within the shrine grounds for good luck include the "Reunion Tree" (pictured below), which is said to make prayers for a reunion with a loved one or a future encounter come true, as well as the "Aikei Rock," where it is believed that if you close your eyes and think of a loved one or pray for an encounter with someone you have yet to meet, and can safely reach the other rock, your love will come true.

Another hot topic is the "Ofuda Omamori Juyosho" (Amulet and Charm Delivery Center), designed by interior designer Masamichi Katayama of Wonderwall. It is a stylish space with glass walls.

Behind the gift shop is an observation stage with a panoramic view of the Dazaifu cityscape. It is equipped with a stool and a two-seater bench made of Aji stone, designed by Jasper Morrison, a world-renowned product designer from the UK.
