[Sasaguri Town] Donzan Kannonji Temple

Nomiyama Kannonji Temple is a special head temple of the Koyasan Shingon sect and is affectionately known as "Nomiyama-san."

Every year from the end of October, over a thousand maples, a thousand Enkianthus campanulatus, wild cherry trees, hazels, oak trees and other trees begin to change color, and the entire temple grounds are enveloped in a colorful autumn glow. The best time to see them is around November.

The Enkianthus campanulatus at Hyaku Kannon-do Temple apparently changes color earlier than the maples.

The Autumn Leaves Festival will be held from Saturday, October 26th to Sunday, November 24th, 2024. Food trucks and other stalls will be set up on a daily basis.

During the Autumn Leaves Festival, the rose garden "Kaentei" adjacent to the Yugi Daihoto Pagoda will also be open to the public. Surrounded by maples on all sides, you can enjoy autumn leaves along with autumn roses.

[Dazaifu City] Homangu Kamado Shrine

Homangu Kamado Shrine is a shrine enshrined at the foot of Mount Homan, which is revered as the mountain where gods reside, and is beloved as the god of matchmaking.

Every year from mid- to late November, the approximately 500 maple trees in the temple grounds change color, turning the approach to the shrine into a tunnel of autumn leaves.

The temple grounds will be illuminated from November 16th (Saturday) to 30th (Saturday), 2024, creating a fantastic atmosphere. In addition, the Momiji Festival will be held on November 23rd (Saturday, national holiday) and 24th (Sunday), 2024.

[Dazaifu City] Kanzeonji Temple

Kanzeonji Temple was built at the request of Emperor Tenchi in memory of Empress Saimei. It was completed in 746 and is a central temple in Kyushu.

There is a lot of greenery within the temple grounds, and every year from mid-November to late November the trees change color, adding beauty to the tranquil space with their autumn leaves.

Also not to be missed are the 16 Buddhist statues dating from the Heian to Kamakura periods housed in the treasure house (storage facility), which are all important cultural properties of Japan.

[Kurume City] Yanagisaka Sone Wax Tree Line

The Yanagisakasone Wax Tree Line is a row of wax trees planted by the Kurume Domain in 1742 as a source of wax for lamps. Currently, there are about 260 trees remaining, which turn a deep red in autumn. The best time to see them is usually from mid- to late November.

It was designated a natural monument of Fukuoka Prefecture in May 1964, and its scenery is well worth seeing, having been selected as one of the "New 100 Views of Japanese Street Trees" (Yomiuri Shimbun).

The Yanagisaka Goby Festival will be held from November 16th (Sat) to 24th (Sun), 2024. Street stalls and food trucks will be set up along the road.

Additionally, the wax tree-lined street will be turned into a pedestrian precinct only on November 16th (Saturday), 17th (Sunday), 23rd (Saturday, national holiday), and 24th (Sunday).

[Kurume City] Yanagisakayama Eishoji Temple

About a 15-minute walk up the row of wax trees in Yanagisaka Sone, halfway up Keshikeshiyama, is the temple "Yakushi Nyorai" (Bhaisajyaguru Buddha), called "Yanagisakayama Eishoji." It is said to have been founded in 680 AD, and is counted as one of the three great Yakushi temples in Japan, along with "Ichibata in Izumo" and "Yamada in Iyo."

Also known as "Maple Temple," the temple is filled with the vibrant red and yellow autumn leaves of the Japanese maples and the large ginkgo tree next to the main hall, which is estimated to be over 300 years old. The best time to see the leaves is usually from mid- to late November.

There is a walking path behind the main hall, and at the top of the path is an observation deck. You can enjoy the city view and the beautiful autumn leaves at the same time. You can also see the rows of wax trees of Yanagisaka Sone dyed bright red.

[Hirokawa Town] Taiyuan Ginkgo

A row of about 80 ginkgo trees in the Taiyuan area. It is privately owned, but thanks to the owner's generosity, it is open to the public only during viewing periods.

The viewing period for 2024 will be from Friday, November 15th to Sunday, November 24th, from 9am to 5pm.

The carpet of colored trees and leaves shines golden all over, creating a breathtaking, spectacular sight.

The large branches spread out close to the ground, making it easy to take close-up photos.

[Yame City Yabe Village] Hyugagami Gorge

Hyugagamikyo is located upstream of the Yabe River, where the legend remains that the god of Hyuga descended on a celestial horse. From early to late November, you can enjoy the colorful autumn leaves of the maples that surround the dam lake.

The view from the red arch bridge "Kehogi Bridge," visible in the background of the photo, is amazing.

In addition to the popular power spot, Heart Rock, you can also see seven rocks named after the Seven Lucky Gods, and other spectacular views like a landscape painting made up of intricately layered large rocks.

[Yame City Yabe Village] Hidden Land Somanosato Keiryu Park

From the thrilling Soma Suspension Bridge, which spans the valley at an altitude of 640m, you can see the colorful autumn leaves that fill the mountain valley.

At the Hikyou Somanosato Keiryu Park, you can also try your hand at pottery and stream fishing.

[Kuroki Town, Yame City] Green Pal Hinatakamikyo

Green Pal Hyugagamikyo is a campsite located next to Matsuse Dam, downstream of Hyugagami Dam, surrounded by rocky mountains on three sides and close to forests and lakes. It's actually a great place to see autumn leaves.

You can enjoy the autumn leaves while enjoying activities such as walks, bird watching, and fishing (fishing equipment rental available).

“Autumn foliage camping” is also great.

[Yame City Kurogi Town] Yamanaka Valley

Yamanaka Valley is the best spot in Kurogi Town to see autumn leaves, so much so that it is also called "Maple Valley."

The scenery, which includes the beautiful rock joints of the "Jubako Rock," the riverbed polished by the running water, and several small waterfalls, is brilliantly colored by the autumn leaves.

You can enjoy the beautiful autumn leaves reflected on the surface of the river while listening to the murmuring of the quiet, clear stream.

Since it has been developed as a park, there are promenades and gazebos along the stream, making it a great place for walking!

[Itoshima City] Raizan Sennyoji Daihio-in Temple

Raizan Sennyoji Daihiouin, a historic temple boasting a history of approximately 1,300 years, is also known as one of the best spots to see autumn leaves in Itoshima.

There is a large maple tree that is about 400 years old and is designated as a natural monument of Fukuoka Prefecture, which turns a deep red in November. The sight of the fallen leaves spread out like a carpet on the beautiful sand and moss is also a spectacular sight.

In addition to the large maple tree, there is also a garden with over 200 maple trees where you can enjoy the autumn colors.

Be sure to also take a look at the wooden standing statue of Thousand-Armed Thousand-Eyed Kannon and the wooden seated statue of Shoga Shonin, both of which are nationally designated Important Cultural Properties made during the Kamakura period!

[Setakacho, Miyama City] Kiyomizu-dera Temple Main Hall Garden

Located in the northeast of Miyama City, Mount Kiyomizu is home to the ancient temple Kiyomizu-dera, founded by Saicho. This place has been chosen as one of the "500 Beautiful Walking Paths" (by the Japan Walking Association), and is especially beautiful and worth seeing during the autumn foliage season.

Among them, the nationally designated scenic spot "Kiyomizu-dera Temple Main Temple Garden," which is said to have been created by Sesshu during the Muromachi period, is a must-see.

The beauty of nature and man-made things blends beautifully together, and each season has its own charm, but the autumn leaves season, which usually runs from late November to early December, is particularly beautiful. The view from the veranda is very tasteful.

Shiranoe Botanical Garden is located on a small hill facing the Suo-Nada Sea on the eastern side of Moji Ward, Kitakyushu City. With a theme of nostalgic Japanese landscapes, you can enjoy seasonal flower scenery throughout the year.

During the autumn foliage season, the approximately 800 Japanese maples and other trees display magnificent colors.

As the sea is nearby and temperatures are mild, the leaves change color slowly, and the best time to see them is usually from late November to early December.

[Kitakyushu City] Sarakurayama Cable Car

Sarakurayama is a night view spot representing Kitakyushu City, which was certified as one of the "New Top Three Night View Cities in Japan" (Night View Tourism Convention Bureau, a general incorporated association) in 2022. From an altitude of 622m, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Kitakyushu city, a beautiful view also known as the "10 billion dollar night view." It has also been selected as one of the "New Top Three Night Views of Japan" and "Top 100 Night Views" (New Top Three Night Views of Japan and Top 100 Night Views Secretariat).

The charm of Mount Sarakura isn't limited to the nighttime. It is also rich in nature, and you can enjoy the autumn leaves in the fall.

The view from the 360-degree glass-walled cable car windows is particularly spectacular. The best time to see the view is usually from late November to early December.

Enjoy the changing scenery over the 1,100m journey from base station to summit station, with an elevation difference of just over 440m, over the course of about 6 minutes.

[Chikujo Town] Metasequoia tree-lined road around Metase no Mori

Behind the Chikujo Town Product Center "Metase no Mori" is a 50-meter-long "metasequoia" tree-lined road. Every year around the end of November, the trees turn a brick red and are at their best.

[Soeda Town] Mount Hiko

Mount Hiko, located on the border between Fukuoka and Oita prefectures, is a sacred mountain that has been worshipped as a mountain of ascetic practices since ancient times.

The 3km approach to the Kamimiya Shrine of Hikosan Shrine at the summit is a famous spot for viewing autumn leaves. Every year, the maples around the Kamimiya Shrine start to change color between late October and early November, and the leaves slowly move to the foot of the mountain, allowing you to enjoy the beautiful scenery for a long period of time.

In addition to the ginkgo tree next to the bronze torii gate (Kane-no-torii), a nationally designated Important Cultural Property located at the entrance to the shrine, there is a wide variety of maple and other autumn leaves, and the mountain is brilliantly colored with a variety of greens, yellows, reds and crimsons.

We also recommend enjoying the view of the autumn leaves below from the summit, which can also be enjoyed from the slope car.

Mount Hiko Buzenbo Takazumi Shrine

The autumn foliage at the parking lot of Hikosan Buzenbo Takasumi Shrine, lined with large maples, is a spectacular sight. The best time to see them is usually in early November.

Mount Hiko Daigongen

If you visit Mt. Hiko, you should also visit Hikosan Daigongen. It is located halfway up Mt. Hiko, right next to Hikosan Onsen Shakunageso.

The entire vast grounds, including the gardens and the area around the branch temple's Acala statue shown in the photo above, are colored with colorful autumn leaves, creating a world reminiscent of a woodblock print.

The best time to see the flowers is usually early November.

[Asakura City] Around Akizuki Castle Ruins

Akizuki is a castle town full of charm and is also known as the "Little Kyoto of Chikuzen."

There are about 20 maple trees around the Kuromon Gate of Akizuki Castle ruins, and the contrast between their bright red leaves and the Kuromon Gate is beautiful.

The best time to see the flowers is usually from late November to early December. Every year, the area is crowded with tourists with their cameras ready, starting from early in the morning.

Additionally, Suginobaba Street is lined with outdoor stalls where you can enjoy the scenery while savoring tea and sweets.

[Fukuoka City] Momiji Yahata

Momiji Hachimangu Yahata is a shrine that attracts devout believers as the guardian deity of Sawara, safe childbirth, protection from misfortune, and children. As its name suggests, there are many maple trees within the shrine grounds.

The best time to see the maples is usually in late November. The contrast between the crimson maples, the vermilion shrine building, and the blue sky above is amazing. The branches are also magnificent.

From November 23rd (Saturday, national holiday) to December 1st (Sunday), 2024, the trees in the temple grounds will be lit up until 8pm each day. You'll be greeted by a fantastical world that is a little different from the daytime.

[Fukuoka City] Shofuen

Shofuen, which has a teahouse and a Japanese garden, was developed on the site of Shofuso, the mansion of Zenpachi Tanakamaru, the founder of Fukuoka Tamaya.

The symbolic tree, the Japanese maple, is a giant tree that is over 100 years old. It has seven lobes in its leaves, which are named after the seven characters in the Japanese alphabet, Iroha, Nihoheto. It is a sight to behold during the autumn foliage season.

There is also a picturesque maple tree in the teahouse garden.

[Fukuoka City] Yusentei Park

Yusentei Park was developed as Fukuoka City's first stroll-around Japanese garden with a pond, and is a venerable garden built in the mid-Edo period as an annex (villa) by the sixth lord of the Kuroda clan, Tsugutaka. It is also a Fukuoka City designated Place of Scenic Beauty.

There are about 150 maple trees in the garden, which is about 10,000m2 in size, and they are a delight to the eyes from late October to early December. The view from the large hall facing the pond is amazing.

The peak time varies slightly from year to year, but it usually occurs around November 20. Along with the maples, the autumn foliage of the Enkianthus campanulatus is also a sight to behold.

[Fukuoka City] Rakusuien

Rakusuien is an urban oasis within walking distance of Hakata Station (about 12 minutes) where you can enjoy the autumn leaves.

This Japanese garden was developed on the site of a villa built in 1906 by Hakata merchant Shimozawa Zen'emon Chikamasa.

The best time to see the autumn leaves is from late November to early December. The entire park is decorated with vibrantly colored leaves. The contrast with the "Hakata Wall" is also picturesque.
