[Half-day trip and reasonable price] Popular with children! "Real-life" food sample making experience report (Minami-ku, Fukuoka City)
Hello! I'm Hakata Aya, a writer who loves hot information about Fukuoka.
Food samples make choosing your menu more exciting when eating at a restaurant.
Using a traditional Japanese expression technique invented between the Taisho and early Showa periods, delicate and lifelike food samples are truly works of art! There's a shop where you can make your own food samples!
"Sample Riki" where you can make your own one-of-a-kind "food sample" (Kashiwara, Minami-ku, Fukuoka City)
Sample Riki is a place where you can experience making food samples. It is located in a quiet residential area in Kashiwara, Minami-ku, Fukuoka City, but there is a dedicated parking lot (for four regular cars), so you can come by car with peace of mind.
I made a reservation through the homepage.
A tempura-making demonstration by a craftsman
First, the staff demonstrated how to make a tempura sample using wax.
Pour the hot wax into bath-temperature water, add the ingredients, and the batter will coat them in no time. Dunk them in cold water for a second, and your tempura is done!
It takes just a dozen seconds for one piece of tempura to be made, a feat that requires expert skill.
This is how lettuce is made. Pour white and green wax into hot water in equal proportions, stretch it while dipping it in the hot water, and roll it up to make a lettuce that looks just like the real thing!
When you cut it, you can see that it is definitely lettuce all the way through to the inside.
What kinds of food samples can you make?
Food samples you can make at "Food Replica Riki" include "Parfait," "Natto rice/salmon roe rice," "Cookie cake," "Tempura/lettuce," etc. The price varies depending on what you make.
Some of the recipes require tools, so they may be difficult for children to make on their own, but the popular "Parfait" is easy even for small children to make.
Even kids can easily make it! Try making a parfait food replica
This time, two elementary school-aged children tried their hand at making parfaits.
The basic parfait base costs 1,870 yen, plus the price depends on the amount of toppings you add on top.
They will lend you a calculator so you can select parts while doing calculations.
Each part costs around 60 to 700 yen.
There are lots of parts that will make you happy just by looking at them, such as fruits, cookies, wafers, and macarons.
After much deliberation, I chose parts worth about 1,000 yen each!
Next, create the base of the parfait. Choose the color of the sauce you want to put inside, and then pour in the soft serve ice cream.
The soft serve ice cream comes out when you pull the lever. The staff will kindly assist you, so even children can easily make it with peace of mind!
Add the flakes and then top with soft serve ice cream to complete the base of the parfait.
Move to the creation booth and add the topping parts you selected earlier.
Payment is made after completion, so you can add more parts while checking the balance of the parfait.
A delicious, one-of-a-kind parfait has been completed!
Food samples are on sale and there is also a photo corner
Inside the store there are lots of "funny hats" made from food samples, which you can try on and enjoy taking commemorative photos.
A wonderful spaghetti dish.
They also sold earrings and key chains, all of which were intricately made and would make perfect souvenirs.
The total time from the tempura-making demonstration, explanation of the food samples, part selection, to creating the parfait takes about an hour and a half.
We stayed there for about 2 hours, enjoying taking photos!
Both children and adults can participate, so why not take this opportunity to get up close and personal with traditional Japanese culture? (Text by Aya Hakata.)
