Dazaifu is famous for Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, but another place you should definitely visit is Homangu Kamado Shrine, the shrine dedicated to matchmaking.
Although it is located on the hillside, you can reach it in about 10 minutes by taking the community bus "Mahoroba-go" from Nishitetsu "Dazaifu" station.
There are many popular gourmet and sweet shops around Nishitetsu Dazaifu Station, so we recommend enjoying them before or after your visit!

[Worship] Homangu Kamado Shrine
Homangu Kamado Shrine has a long history of over 1,350 years since its founding.

Since the main deity enshrined here is Tamayorihime-no-Mikoto, she is worshipped as the "goddess of matchmaking," who attracts and brings together souls (tama) and souls (yori).
In ancient times, the shrine was used to ward off evil spirits from the Dazaifu government office, and people prayed for the safety of their voyages to the continent and for success in their business. As a result, the shrine is also deeply revered as a god of protection from evil and misfortune. Many people visit the shrine to pray for good relationships between men and women, as well as good connections with family, friends, work, and nature, as well as those starting a new life and those reaching a turning point in their lives.
One of the most notable features of the temple grounds is the Ofuda Omamori Juyosho (charm and amulet gift shop), designed by interior designer Masamichi Katayama of Wonderwall. It is a stylish space made of glass.

This talisman has a red thread and a "reunion fruit" attached to it, which is modeled after the beans that grow on the "reunion tree," which is believed to make your wish come true if you pray for a reunion or find love with your loved one.
Other items available include the "Pair of Zodiac Ema" (800 yen), "Eto Bell" (800 yen), and "Eto Fortune Telling" (500 yen).

[Sweets Eating Tour] Amaou Sweets in "Tenzan"
Tenzan Dazaifu Main Branch is located immediately after exiting Nishitetsu Dazaifu Station, next to the first torii gate on the approach to the shrine.
This is a take-out specialty Japanese sweets shop famous for its "Onigawara Monaka," a Dazaifu specialty.

Something you definitely want to try during this time of year is the "Amaou Daifuku Monaka" (700 yen) and the "Amaou Strawberry Dango" (700 yen)! Both are available until early May.

"Amaou Daifuku Monaka" is a large monaka with a big Amaou strawberry inside. You can choose from three types of bean paste: Yame matcha, white bean paste, and tsubu bean paste.

And then there's the "Amaou Strawberry Dumplings," where you can enjoy large Amaou strawberries and homemade dango. You can eat them in the order of Amaou strawberries → dango → Amaou strawberries, so you won't get bored until the very end.

[Lunch tour] Curry dog at "Curry & Cafe Sawa"
Curry & Cafe Sawa is located about a seven-minute walk from Dazaifu Station. It is a traditional Japanese-style cafe that opened in July 2021.

The interior of the store requires you to take your shoes off, creating a homey atmosphere that makes you want to say, "I'm home!"
During the New Year holiday period (until January 5, 2022), the restaurant will be open for take-out only, offering curry dogs (440 yen), hot coffee (220 yen), and soft drinks (220 yen each).

The restaurant will resume normal business hours from January 6, 2022, and customers can enjoy the restaurant's signature "Greedy Double" (990 yen), a combination of two types of spice curry.

[Sweets eating tour] Fresh pudding ice cream from "Kotorii Sabo"
Kotorii Sabo is located along Kotorii Shoji, a 3-minute walk from Dazaifu Station. The shop is a completely renovated old house that is over 100 years old, with only the foundation remaining.

What you want to try here is the "Fresh Pudding Ice Cream" (550 yen), an improved version of the most popular dessert, "Kotorii Fresh Pudding", perfect for eating on the go!

The top is filled with caramel sauce, which has a slightly bitter, brown sugar syrup flavor that adds an accent.
It has a crunchy texture at first, but as it melts it turns into the soft texture of fresh pudding. It tastes like rich vanilla ice cream.
Not only can you enjoy snacking on the "Fresh Pudding Ice Cream" while walking around the store, but you can also enjoy lunch and sweets inside the store.

[Cafe] Cheesecake from "Cheesecake Laboratory"
The Cheesecake Laboratory is located about 5 minutes from Dazaifu Station.

The store's landmark is a warehouse with the store's mascot, Chuta-kun, painted on it.

As the name suggests, this is a cheesecake shop, and their "Seasonal Cheesecake" made with seasonal fruits is always very popular, but the two standard flavors available are the "White Cheesecake" and the "Black Cheesecake" (900 yen each with a drink). Both are cheesecakes made only with cream cheese, fresh cream, sugar, and white chocolate.

Slowly baked at low temperature in a water bath, it's moist and smooth! It has a rich cheese butter flavor with a hint of white chocolate.
And this is the "Black Cheesecake".

Baked at high temperature for a short time, the surface is charred, making it fragrant on the outside and moist on the inside! The bitter and fragrant surface goes perfectly with the rich, sweet flavor of the cheese inside.
